458 Lott vs 458 wm vs 45-70

Go with the lott if you ever had to deal with a moose that runs into the water and dies, its not fun. I like to see them go down on the spot. But I like powerfull cartriges. Just me.

Geez, I wonder if it should be kept in the family then, rather than trading it off! ??? only question is, which one of us has the guts to pull the trigger on it! I did try it once! I'm game to step down & away!

I'm not a big fan of straight wall rifle cartridges, but the .458 Winchester is what I have, and perhaps its more versatile than the .458 Ultra/.460 G&A that I lust for. With a case full of H-335 (ball powder is a great choice for short, straight wall cartridges, especially if you hate drop tubes as much as I do) under Ben's 480 gr WFN cast slugs. Seated long, the 480s clock 2200 fps from a 21" barrel, and 2100 with 500 gr jacketed bullets. The jacketed 500 gr bullets I've found require different loads depending on the length of the shank below the cannelure. The old Hornady RN is shorter, while the new DGX and the Swift is longer which requires a drop in the powder charge, yet velocity remains the same. None of the .458 Matrix bullets at this time have cannelures, and are IMHO not the best choice for a repeater. This same rifle chambered for the wildcat could see an increase of 150-200 fps with 500 gr bullets and would feed a bit nicer.

When comparing a bolt gun and a lever action two things immediately come to mind. The bolt gun handles recoil much better than the Marlin, although I've never tried an 86, but the slim lever gun is way nicer to carry all day than a bolt gun. So if your rifle is carry a lot shoot a little proposition, the lever action might be the better way to go. The trouble is that when you get into this level of power, if you don't shoot regularly your won't maintain your level of competence with the rifle, and for that reason I would choose the bolt gun over the lever action.
