.458 Lott

I think that was the "Whitetail Special", certainly one of Weatherby's better ideas.

I once inadvertently double charged a .30/06 cartridge with 50 grs of SR-4759 under a 210 gr cast bullet and fired it in a M-17 Enfield. [/IMG]

Did the fact it was a cast bullet have anything to do with the lack of damage? Maybe a jacketed bullet would have "given" less and caused a more severe pressure buildup.

And you are right about the Whitetail Special - I have an old catalogue sitting around somewhere. I'll scan a photo if I can find it.

Almost certainly the choice of a jacketed bullet wouldn't have improved the situation, but I have great confidence in the M-17 actions. The degree to which the primer pocket expanded (I forgot to mention that the flash hole also expanded, matching the primer pocket diameter) along with the stamping of the case head lettering into the bolt face is pretty good evidence of very high pressure. I wouldn't attempt to push a 200 gr bullet to 2800 with slow burning powder in an '06, and I cringe to think what the pressure might have been with 50 grs of fast burning 4759.

I didn't bother to read all the posts in this thread, but back to the original point, the CZ rifles are a great buy in my opinion if you're looking to get something chambered in .458 Lott.

I bought a used CZ-550 from Williams Lake (somebody here on GunNutz pointed me to it), it was chambered in .458WM and I had it reamed to take the Lott cartridge. So you can always go that route, if you can't find a Lott.

With the CZ .458 Win, about all you really need to match a .458 Lott is a long seated bullet. The long throat is already there, and the long magazine is too. There are bullets made with the crimping groove moved for this exact reason, and of course the Banded solids and TSXs offer an abundance of alternate crimp grooves.

Or Ackley, or 460G&A (might need some ramp and rail work).
