.458 Socom PAR conversion questions

So I'm debating moving from pump 12ga shotguns for woods protection to a PAR carbine.

I prefer the "AR" styling of the PAR and due to repetitive stress injuries I find pistol grip firearms much easier to use.

My idea is to get a PAR and convert it to .458 Socom. What I'm thinking is I could chop the forend shorter and install as short a barrel as the collapsing stock would allow.

I may need to enlarge the ejection port, what other mods/changes might I be over looking?

Are 5 round .458 mags even available in Canada?

Any thoughts or feedback?

Would I be better off chopping the rail on a .308 version and installing a shorter barrel?

Thanks

I know.

Still debating that...

Depends on what you are using it for. If it is strictly for bear using slugs, then a reliable 308 (or bigger) rifle is at least as good, if not better. Alternatively, there is something to be said about buck shot for wolves and cougars in close quarters, plus the added use with birdshot for small game/upland birds... The versatility of the 12ga is really hard to beat, but the specific use of it for bear protection is overrated in my opinion. Not to say I wouldn't carry my 12ga (I have, and I will continue to in the future) but I don't think its a whole lot better than many of the available alternatives (I would be equally content with a good 180gr hand load in my 303 for instance).

That's my thoughts on the matter too.

A good Remington 870 with 3" chamber & short barrel would be my choice. Easy to find ammo plus a lot cheaper to build. Good luck

Thanks, I've got a 14" 870 all done up with Magpul furniture as well as a 12.5" wearing Hogue...

Guess truth be told I'm pissed by our gun laws preventing us from carrying handguns for wilderness protection so I keep trying to create ways to setup a shotgun or rifle as short and light as possible.

The short shotguns are hard on my old injuries which is why I'm looking at pistol grip stocks and vert grips. Much easier on the hands and wrists.

Gotcha, me too. I also picked up a Remington 870P in 20 gauge with 3" chamber. 3/4 oz (328 grains) in 2.75" chamber slugs are pretty good, too. Easier to shoot as less recoil. Mine is a 20" barrel so may be tough to find a 14" factory barrel. Just another option.

10 shot pistol mags feed the 458 Socom without modification with no feeding problem. Since I own one there is no speculation. They only hold 4 rounds but that is better than 2 rounds
