458 Socom

Wanted to start a thread on this as I am super pumped. After selling off my 1895 sbl and regretting it I decided a replacement was in order. I had heard about the Socom round online as an AR cartridge but looked at the ballistics and see it will go toe to toe with my now gone 45-70 or even exceed it.

Haven't found the action but it will be an M77 or a R700 for sure. Toying with the idea of mag fed as that is always my preference. Hogue stock, 14-20" barrel and a scope in he 1-6x range with a turret just cause

I am defiantly considering a Jury Barrel and figure I would see if there was any interest out there. I would order a 32" blank and hopefully end up with 2 14" barrels. Anyone interested in the second barrel if I go ahead?

Will post progress as it happens but I still have a 280AI build that is first in line.

The SOCOM may match anemic factory .45-70 loads but doesn't come close to full power handloads. The SOCOM is also a proprietary cartridge and only a handful are authorized in the states to chamber barrel for that cartridges. I thought of a similar project a while back but decided to go with the .458x2" (basically a .450 Marlin) in a bolt action. The .458x2" will match and exceed full power .45-70 loads and brass can be made from any regular belted magnum case. It will also make full use of the space available in a short action. My 2 cents.

My gunsmith is working on trying to find a reamer at this time so you are right, I hope I haven't jumped the gun, pun intended

Found a smoking deal on a barrel elsewhere so I've already dropped the 2 barrel from 1 blank idea, would have ended up being too much work for the small savings. Jury will have to wait till my next build for my business. Nothing against him, can't wait to screw in one of his tubes.

So instead of going to all the trouble of building a .45 caliber rifle that doesn't behave like one, why not just get a .458 Winchester. You can load it to .45/70 powder puff levels with light weight cast bullets, or you can heat it up to kick out 500s at 2200 or 450s at 2300. You would have a better stock design than any .45/70 lever action, and there's no lever to bust your knuckles in recoil. Brass is easy to find and not outrageously expensive, then if you ever decide you want to hunt something that hunts back, you'll be ready.

I think it would be cool to do a short action in 458 socom.

Go for it and post up what you learn! similar ballistics to the "gov't", and in a modern bolt action, makes more sense with a short barrel then a longer precision barrel to me as well.

I have a 416 Ruger for my Africa trip in 2 years. This is strictly a "cause I can" build if ya know what I mean. I was going to do an AR at first, but scraped that idea. I like having something different and making each gun my own by changing up components as I see fit.

At least you didn't try talk me out of a build without suggesting an alternative, we can always use another gun

Going with a Rem 700 action for sure, found Brass but it's back ordered, oh well no rush on that anyhow. Big props to CGN sponsors, you are really coming through for me so far.
