458 Win. Mag. & 350gr Speer

Positioning my Leupold M8 Compact 4x28mm scope on some of my rifles is problematic because of its short length, and on my .458 Win. Mag. Remington 798 it's no exception. The eye piece lock nut ends up right against the rear scope ring with the base installed in the conventional manner making it impossible to focus the scope properly.

In one of the threads a while back it was suggested to reverse the rear base to facilitate scope installation. Brilliant. Works fine. Problem solved.

Rifle re-sighted in. Results as shown with my 350gr Speer handloads. Muzzle energy is 4500 ft-lbs. Another rifle good to go.

You seem to have shot a nice target with that set-up. I gave up on that style front extension ring - have you tried putting a dial indicator on the top of that ring and gently squeeze the front of your scope to the barrel? I was getting significant flex - then it started bending and staying bent! As I understand the physics of a scope under recoil, the tendency is for the front of the scope to dive down (or, more correctly, stay put - as the rifle rises), so it is really preferable to have a solid pillar for the front.

Thanks for the heads up. Seems to be sufficient rigidity to not be a concern but will definitely keep an eye on it. This rifle doesn't shoot too bad. Nice trigger.
