Hey just wondering if anyone uses H4831sc for their 458 Win Mag's? If so how did it work for You? I have 450gr Barnse TSX and 400gr speer softs to work with. I was going to pick up some 500gr Nosler Partitions. Im open to suggestions on bullets aswell.
Any info would be great!
Thanks

Too slow, too slow, for the 458 Win Mag.

It will work, but velocities will be quite low, even with compressed loads.

You need a powder better suited to a straight walled case with a large diameter. [W 748, 3031, 4064, 4320, H322, etc]

Regards, Dave.

Oh ok good to know. Im using 3031 right now. But I thought I would try H4831sc. But now I think I will just stick with 3031. I bought the H4831sc for my 25-06 and 300 WSM. Looks like it will just be used for the those and not my 458.
Thanks for the help!

I had very good luck with Barnes 450 TSX and 76 gr. of H335 with CCI 250 primers. They're right on the edge of 'compressed' - there's enough room to crimp and that's it. Mind you, H335 doesn't compress like stick powder. It's kind of like trying to compress sand.
I don't recall the velocity (I don't think I had a chronometer in those days) but they shot clover leaves, and I always took accuracy over velocity. Still do.

I'd forget all about 4831SC unless you want a slow load for cast bullets that still keeps the case full.

In the Hodgdons line look to H4895 for 450 and 500 grain bullets. H4198 is worth considering if you run into compression issues. H335 is good.

If you really want to wake up the .458 get some A2230.

On a sidenote, if you buy your 500 grain Partitions at WSS make sure you're hanging onto something when you get to the till. I don't remember exactly where or when I got my Partitions, but I'm reasonably certain I never paid 6 bucks apiece for them.

I'm taking the 450 grain A-Frame to 2350fps with A2230. Things just stay hit and accuracy is very good. I do have a load for the 500 grain partition and H4895 that I can use interchangeably and will likely pop something with in aug.

Darn Partitions only have 25 in the box too. I don't think they've quite realized that the Winchester Supreme factory ammo loaded with 500 grain Partitions is $149 a box in the same store, and that Cabelas down the street seems to get Federal Premium loaded with all sorts of great bullets out the door for $108.

Yeah its funny how the pricing works. I would like to try some Woodleigh bullets. I know Tradex sells Woodleigh's. I will have to check out what they are worth. I checked out Accurate Powders load data for the A2230. The load data is similar to the A2015 (which I do have) but alittle faster. Il have to try the A2230 along with my A2015.

Woodleighs seem to be right in line with the rest of our premium bullets here, and actually a couple bucks cheaper per box then I found them for in Australia where they are made. They are very good bullets. Near as I can tell all of our (American) premium bullets cost double over there, and ADI powder which they make and we know as Hodgdons costs $50 a tube. I suppose its no worse than IMR powder being made in Canada and sold back to us.

In the past I've used 3031 and 748, but I don't have any of my old notes. The small case capacity of the .458 certainly benefits the use of ball powder, and I've had good luck with H-335. The load I use with the 500 gr Hornady RN is 76 grs and the velocity from my 21" barrel is 2150 in warm weather, and 2100 in the cold. But I drop to 74.5 grs their 500 gr DGX due to the location of the cannelure, which requires deeper seating, and which puts more bullet shank inside the case. With a 480 gr WFN gas checked cast bullet I get 2200 fps. I loaded 77 grs of H-335 under a 450 gr Matrix which has no cannelure and is seated to the same OAL as the 500 gr Hornady RN and got 2166, and I would expect that load to produce an honest 2200 from a 24" barrel. Due to the shorter shank that load wouldn't be compressed, and my notes show no mention of pressure signs, so I might try another half gr or so just to see what happens, but that is not a recommendation.

Oh ya, about those DGXs....................I wouldn't shoot anything big with one, or in my case six.

I've got a RCBS 500 grain FN mold that should get a whirl before summer. I've got a pile of SR4759 for reduced loads and 845 that should work similarly to 335. I've got to break the pattern of plinking with expensive and hard to replace bullets.

Wow lots of great info. Thanks again. Im going to try out some more loads this weekend. Il post my results. I might try some different bullets too. Found a ton of heavy 458 bullets in Calgary.
