458 Win Mag brass?

I did my 338 pretty cheap. I was given the brass but don't shoot 338 so I had to size the neck to .308 and put a little powder in it and a primer then I fired them out of my 458. It makes a dull thud when you pull the trigger and you can see the bullet go. When I opened the bolt I had 458 brass. All my 308 norma brass and most of my 458 brass says 338 win mag on the head.

You don't need a bullet to blow cases out. I made a bunch of .458s out of .300 Win Mags by using 10 grains of Unique, topping up the case with Cream of wheat and plugging the neck by shoving it into a bar of soap. Being .300s they were too long and needed to be trimmed. Now that I have a Lott chamber I'll just use them untrimmed.

Did you have to do much modifying to the magazine and bolt stop to get the Lott cartridge to fit and feed?

On the m70 it takes removing the spacer or changeing the box, deciding whether to change the follower or not, cutting back or changing the bolt stop and ejector. I've decided to go with CDI bottom metal and 5 and 10 shot AI mags instead but bought the parts for the conversion already. Who knows, I may change my mind again or do another one.

Its pretty easy as Dogleg described. I did the mod and it probably took me a bit over an hour. You might also have to open up the rear of the feed rails. They're radiused at the rear and have to be squared up so the cartridge will sit flush against the feed rails so the the bolt can catch the case going forward. That job is beyond some people's comfort zone. If that's you, take it to a smith. Hard to unpooch pooched feed rails.

At this instant they aren't, or at least they aren't selling it as components. The manufacturers are so busy that they are concentrating on what they can sell the most of easily and not change over production lines. They aren't selling .375 either, nobody is making .311 bullets for the .303. You get the picture, there's more profit in tailor made than keeping a bunch of cheap-skate handloaders happy.

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and buy factory ammo for the brass.
