.458 win mag

Referencing the Hornady Handbook 7th edition I currently load 350gr TSX and 350gr RN Hornady with 72.0 gr of Re7 for a muzzle speed of about 2400 fps. Note that this load is safe in my Remington 798 (23" barrel) only. Good accuracy.

458 win mag pet loads

Just picked up a 458 win mag and I'm looking to start loading for it. Does anyone have some pet loads they would like to share. Thanks!

What kind of load are you looking for??? DG, thumper, plinking, mild deer, cast??? What rifle are you loading for?

Not looking for a DG thumping round but a decent deer/bear load. I Was looking at the 350 gr hornady or the 400 gr speer.

I use 65.0 grains of H4895 with 350 SP's to whack late season flopheads... loads of fun. My No.1-H .450/400 NE 3" is enroute, but I have a batch of 370 grain RNFB bullets being made and sized to .411" kindly by bullet barn... will be trying these with Puff-Lon ballistic filler and a moderate load of H4350.

My .458 light bullet load was the 350 TSX seated to the second groove on top of 69grains of H4198. Had that up past 71, but 69 shot close to the POI of the heavier bullets. Velocity is in the 26s . Killed a lot of pigs and buffalo with that load. The Hornady made a less expensive plinking and practice bullet.

72 gr H4895 under a 400 gr woodliegh ppsn or 405 gr Remington flat nose jacketed
I get 2400-2425fps with the woodlieghs. Easy to shoot and fairly flat to 225 yards
I worked up a load with the 300 gr hollow points from Hornady but can't remember the powder off hand. I got to almost 2600 fps iirc.
My 458 has a 26.5" barrel

I went with some 45/70 loads on 300gr and it seemed to work alright, total pussycat to shoot then. I didn't do extensive accuracy testing however.

Results with Hornady 350gr RN and Re7 in my 458 WM. Using a chronograph when developing loads is a good idea. Fliers can be the result of erratic muzzle speeds.

72.0 grs (full case) of H4198 under a Hornady 350 gr RN for 2475 fps.

I have also reduced this load to 30.0 grs for 1300 fps.

Everything in between could be tried as well.

I love H4198 for all my 45 Cal rifles - 43 Mauser, 45-70, 45-90 and 458 Win Mag.

I have a #1 and a Ruger 77 in .458 they both shoot very accurate with the 350Hornady at about 2300 FPS fueled by IMR 4198, this is a good powder you can vary the charge from 1200-2500 FPS.

I have had very good luck with 75.0 grains of H335, 500 grain Hornady RNSP, Federal 215 primer and Remington cases in my Brno model 602. Velocity from the 25 inch barrel is just a hair under 2100 fps (instrumental 12 feet from the muzzle - actual muzzle velocity is probably right at 2100 fps). Accuracy is very good in my rifle. Hope this helps.
