I'm FNG learning how to navigate thru site so bear with me.

Associate asked me to load him very warm 458WM 500 DGS for Ruger #1.

I have dies but no prior exp. with this cal. Looks like around 73x W748 or IMR4320 but thought I'd check for personal prefs.

My Albertan friend is contemplating trip for Big 5 but wants to experience what is required before major expenditures. Currently all he has is the #one which is poor choice for Dangerous Game. He has relied on my reloading his hunt loads for decades. He's coming to Fly Fish soon as ice-off and thinks I shud be able to load him some test shots.

Tnx for ur asst

I reload for a No 1 in 458 Lott. It's just as easy as anything else. It being a single shot you don't have to worry about the crimp. Just look in your Hornady reloading book and find what the powder charge is.

I use H335 and load both 500gr DGX and 500gr Barnes TSX. I like the Barnes bullets and use them for hunting but they are more expensive.

I would load him up three different power levels and let him pick the kick that is the most he could take with fast repeat shots.

A good gun for a hunt is a gun that is so familiar to the hunter that nothing else feels more natural and fluent... this is the gun that should be use.

Have you tried looking up the Hogdon site and the Alliant site, as two examples, for factory proven loading data? They both have loads for the .458 Winchester Magnum with 500 grain bullets.

Tnx. Manuals provide start point, but I have no time to experiment nor background to make recommendation for either load or rifle. That is why I asked. I'm actually trying to dissuade friend as we're both too old to chase anything with claws. It was hoped to build him something that would require trip to optometrist to straighten out his eyeballs and blood to circulate to his brain again. Maybe his "Bucket List" would change to a "G" or an "F" list.
