Bought a real whitworth from a fellow cgner in 458 win mag, and man oh man group. Rival my sako 22/250...Now what I'm starting to notice is that its a tad less able to group...I made the mistake of not firing all the 50 brass the same times each with the same load each, etc, etc. So now I'm noticing slight recoil diffs, slight primer seating pressure diffs. The average # of loads is 5 near max. Some pieces 4 some six...Even though none of the brass are showing major probs, could these very slight diffs. be causing slight chamber pressure variations, thusly grouping probs..My opinion is that it would. My buddies opinion is that as long as a straight wall case will hold a primer the grouping shouldnt change...Any thoughts???

How much copper in your barrel, mabey it just needs a good cleaning. The brass should not effect the accuracy unless it is to long and needs trimming.

Are you using ball powder? This became quite an issue in Africa with game departments which issued .458's. Apparently the rounds lost performance after even a short time in hot storage, and over several months had dropped to 1600 fps.

What powder are you using? is it Temp sensitive from summer to winter?

H4198 . I got some new stuff loaded up,we'll give that a bore...The whitworth cannot be fowled unlike my other 45 cal stuff that shows an orange bore after first shot, the whit can fire all week without a trace..No machining marks whatsoever

Have you cleaned it?

You may as well start simple first!:)

Ya, but like I said, when you wipeout the bore of this gun you can hardly see any copper. Its often went two to three times as many rounds between cleaning without issue

Suspect it may indeed be your brass. Start anew with new unfired, sizeed & trimmed to length, vand why not give the barrel a good cleaning following directions with something like Barnes CR-10 (works great). Start shooting with your favourite loads (maybe check your powder scales accuracy). If no improvement, suggest you looks to the scope &/or mounts. Bedding screws & cross bolts all tight ???
