Has anybody had any experience with this cartridge ?
My question is can I use 458 win. dies for loading ? Its the same specs except 1/4" shorter.
I know there"s lots of the 458 X 2 American out there, do you need specific dies? I'm thinking being a straight case it would be like a 357 mag and a 38 special.

Cheaper way would be 450 marlin dies. It's identical to 458 American but hornady moved the belt ahead so you can't use any belted mag for brass.

I thought about that, the 450 Marlin is 2.1" OAL would that still size a case that is 2.25" ? The top of the case would be most important I suppose .15" at the bottom wouldn't matter too much

I might get back to you on that I haven't bought the rifle yet still pending just trying to figure out what I'm getting into, I asked the seller to provide a couple fired cases for a pattern he's in Europe right now won't be back till Monday. If I was a little quicker on the draw I would have bought that Mod 7 magnum action you had you sale a while back, I always wanted a 458 X 2 I've never heard of a 2 1/4" until today.

Too late. These were both fired in the same chamber 450ackley magnum brass. I cut them both back to 2 1/4".
The one on the right was resized using lyman 450 marlin dies, the one on the left with lee 458win mag dies. Bases measure the same, the mouth is 0.002" tighter on the marlin.

Perfect !
Thanks double gun I owe you a beer sometime. Prophet river has some 450 marlin dies in stock, I'll talk to the seller on Monday and pull the pin

I thought about buying that gun for awhile. Ended up thinking I wanted a 458 socom in a bolt gun instead. Good luck with it. I have a 458 wm and love it. Trade ex is good ppl

This is the most obscure cartridge I've ever come across I can't find any reference to to it anywhere ( unless it named after someone), I'll have to check my Ackley books when I get home somebody must have shortened the 458 wm by 1/4" to fit into a Mauser magazine.
My plan is use 458 wm - 450 Marlin data for starting
EG.
*********** Start --- Max
H322 458 WM* 75 --- 80-2589 fps
450 M *******53 --- 58-2196 fps
458 X 2 1/4 ***64 --- 69-2393-fps?
350 grain bullet
Water capacity
458 WM=94
450 Mar=74
458x2.25= 84?

It would be cool having a "one of" gun though, I've always had a thing for pre 39 Mausers, I have a nice stock to replace the Fajen star wars one.

Actually they moved the belt ahead so you can't chamber it in a smaller bore belted magnum rifle chamber like a 300 weatherby, which is one reason why the 458 American never caught on.
