I have a dvd showcasing hyenas vs lions. The footage was impressive. The hyenas did manage to kill a couple females but there was a big maned male that dominated. One event was broad daylight. It was gruesome. It showed wild dogs as well. The pack leaders are female. I'll try to find the exact title.
Impressive shooting there dogleg. I found this Mauser to kick like my mossberg with 600 gr brenneke slugs. Fast and hard but very manageable. It fits like a dream

I'd like to see that, hope you can dig up the title, an angry Lion's guttural rumble is one of the eeriest sounds you can have come out of the bush in front of you. If it doesn't make the hair on the back of your neck stand up, you don't have a heartbeat.

Zimbabwe is a wing shooter's paradise. I did more wingshooting there than anything really, it's my favourite hunting. My PH there has a good bird dog to boot.
What kind of bird is that?
Top is a guinea fowl (size of a domestic chicken) and the bottom is a francolin grouse..........similar to a ruffie all white meat.
Interesting. The top one looks like what I saw at the petting zoo yesterday, hanging out with the peacocks.
My farthest .458 shot was about 200 yards on the south end of a northbound buffalo, it stoned him and he rolled about 3 times in a big cloud of dust. I think it was the 4'th shot into him and none of the others seemed to phase him at all.
I think it would be unusual for a spotted hyena to be much over 150lbs- here's a mature old male from the selous. Gun is a pre64 .375 for size reference.

Females are larger than males in the hyena species. I have seen a few of them in Tanz. and Zim. and never saw one that I thought would be close to 200lbs male or female. They do have an impressive set of chompers though

It most likely was, guinea fowl have been exported all over the world and can be bought from most places that sell chicks and turkeys. They are amazing guards and sound a very loud alarm when they spot a hawk or any other type of danger.
The longest 1st shot I've taken in the field with a .458 was my first Australian buffalo. We had moved in on him to about 75 yards and bumped him a couple times. About the time he wasn't having anything more to do with us, the guide made some comment that we weren't going to be able to get close and that we should find another one. Thing is, the whole time I was under the mistaken impression that he was trying to get a closer look at the horns while he was trying for powderburn distances. Once I got that figured out I told him I could kill him where he was standing at the moment, and he just shrugged and said "well, if you're confident. The shot was through an opening in the bush at about 150 yards and I got a solid shoulder hit in. The bull went medium rodeo and I put another up his rear right beside his tail when he wheeled and headed out. That one was likely another 20 yards farther away. The bull was down and dead in a bedding position when we approached, which lead to some more confusion where we threw half of Australia at him trying to get him to move.
It isn't that a .458 can't reach a bit; its more that on animals that warrant the big guns long shooting just isn't done. 50 is long for buffalo and 25 is right up there for elephant. Part of that is because the terrain favors close approaches, part because dangerous game isn't dangerous unless it can touch you and part is that a screw-up is an expensive mistake that can get someone hurt. The big bullets lose velocity fast, and many don't have much to begin with. There's a real threshold around 2000 fps impact velocity that makes the difference between hitting something and slamming it, and that's been widely accepted since the transition to smokeless powder.
Since we were doing a cull at the same time, some longer shots were made during the hunt after we established a few things but those were done with a .375 H&H.
No doubt, I've got a system where I use the B&C crosshairs for 150,200,250,and 300 but the situation hasn't come up. Yet.
I use a .458WM, hunt BIG 5, GS Customs solids in a 450gr
very nice recipe that I need to try and maybe not keeping that 375 ruger lol ....
