For those loading light weight bullets in their 458wms what powder are you using?
My supply of 400gr ppsn woodlieghs are depleting so I was looking at trying the 350gr hotcor. Id like to be above 2400fps to flatten out trajectory

I heard and got gifted some accurate 2230 that is suppose to work great!!
But I’ve need using this IMG_0735.jpegIMG_0736.jpeg

This morning I brought the 458 to re zero that is my best group so far with that rifle.

What were you using for your 400gr loads, out of curiosity? I'm working with the 405 Remington corelokt bullets (I have a TON of these kicking around). Mostly, I'm trying for a medium velocity loading, maybe 2200-2400fps; the bullets were designed for 45-70 speeds. I've tried some old SR4759 and some Trail Boss.... both were a bit TOO slow (~1200fps). Good accuracy though.

72grs h4895 gave me 2400fps for the most accurate load. I have a 26.5" barrel though

The 405gr rem flat nose soft point up close is drastically effective but does massive damage. At 164 yards i put one into a bear as it turned. Hit the rear hip and traveled up the back strap breaking all the ribs on that side smashed thru the front shoulder and was against the hide in front of the throat. Its as wide as a toonie and held together yet the bear still made it up a hill and into a spruce thicket. Nothing vital was hit. Second shot was at 5' broadside to the chest. Gave a 6" exit hole

The 400gr woodlieghs are a great bullet

I use the 405gr rem flat nose in my 4570 where they really shine. Unfortunately I cant find any more

I was getting fine accuracy with 69.0 gr of imr3031 under the speer 350gr bullets. Velocities averaged around 2150 fps from the 24' barrels that all
my .458wm rifles wore. My load with 58.0 gr of 4198 was a good powder fer me as well when using 300gr sierra's at around 2250 fps.

I'm just getting back into things after a decade off. Discovering all the goodies I'd stashed away is a lot of fun. I found a one gallon bucket full of 405s, and another gallon of the 300 hollowpoints... I'm not too worried about meat damage, mostly I go for chest shots, and theres not too much there anyway.

Good to know your experience, I was curious how they'd perform at velocities well above design...
those 300 grainers will just be grenades though, I think. Varmint fodder.

I loaded some 300gr hornady hp to either 2500 or 2600fps I cant recall which. Shooting a stash of water jugs it was like hitting them with a shot gun
At 2300fps they held up and flattened right out but didnt really penetrate many water jugs. I shoot at 25 yards to test impacts as thats about how far I like to be from game animals. I do mostly archery hunting so I like to get in close even with rifles

You get much expansion at 2150fps? I loaded some to 1800fps in my 4570 and they just basically deformed the nose section and plowed right on thru

Not noticed signs of expansion on any deer I took with with that load as I never recovered the bullets. The deer were dumped with shots through
the shoulders. Heaviest deer was around 150 lbs standing weight @ 50 yds or so. Never bothered with gel testing or water jugs with my rifles.
