.458x2"

I doubt if it is gibbs, because the american was never a commercial round at the time the 600 was running production-wise.
Is there a company selling rifles and loading it now?
I wouldn't chage it if it were me....

I'm with cat, the .458x2" is a great little round. Brass could be made from anything too. The only advantage I see of the .450 is if you don't want to load your own.
The two rounds are almost identical with the .450 having a slightly wider belt and a very slightly longer case.
The 660 in .458x2" would be a great bush carbine, it would be very easy to sell to buy a .450 if you were set on that round.
With that said, I'm sure anyone with a .450 reamer could do this job very quickly and easily. In fact I think it could be done with a .45/70 reamer and bore the rim a little wider with a boring bar.
Nice custom rifle either way. I wouldn't be surprised to see a little .450 bolt carbine in production soon, it would be excellent for northern and bush work for the bolt gun fans. I know some have been made in the Remington and Winchester custom shops.

As mentioned it is the American but it was never factory chambered in anything the only advantage to the Marlin is it is a factory load, several US smiths offer short action bolt .450s . It would increase the resale value as I might sell it although I have the RCBS dies as well as case form set to make brass from any regular magnum brass

seems to me that the 450 marlin case has a belt of a different width (or length if you will) from all other magnum cases....

It does has a wider belt. The reason was so it won't chamber in the smaller bore magnum guns. The wider belt stops the actions from closing.
I would think the .458 American gun would have more value than a .450. .450 as you say is easier for none handloaders, not nearly as interesting though. I went and did some meaurements too. I think the .45/70 reamer would do what you want. The machinist would still have to bore the belt wider though.

I wondered, but I didn't know a great deal about the cartridge so I thought that I would ask.

I'm with Casull - I would pay for a .458X2" bolt gun but I would not consider a bolt gun in the Marlin chambering. Why? Because as stated above, you can use brass from any belted magnum case of that head size. To those of us living a little farther from the local gunshops this is an important consideration, as it is for anyone who has called the bigger shops and heard, "I'm sorry, but that item is on back order!"

That little 600 would be a heck of a close cover big game rifle!

I also have the 458 American. I have a T/C handgun barrel and a '96 mauser. What does your case forming die set do? I have just been cutting down any mag. that have split necks or that are surplus to me. Neat little cart. I may have to go dig my T/C barrel out and fire a few now that this has reminded me. Thanks, Mark
