.45acp and blue dot

Hey guys;
so im pretty new to reloading and i need some advice, i did some research on campros website for reloading .45acp and bought some blue dot powder, but i did something stupid, when i got home from wholesale sports in regina (40mins away) i noticed he gave me all magnum pistol primers, so here is my current handload for .45acp and i would really really appreciate any and all imput, im just unsure about this being safe or not, ill list campros load data, then my own

campro 230 gr round nose fcp

bluedot 7.5 min 8.5 max large pistol primer
c.o.l - 1.250 inch
crimp - .464

Mine

blue dot

7.4 - 7.5

small magnum primer cci

1.260 C.O.L

same crimp .465 - .468

is this a safe load to shoot, or should i just bite the bullet, pull them apart. discharge the cases ive primed, and try again ? these rounds are gunna be used for out door plinking.

The load is safe to shoot, but may be a bit light. I have used magnum pistol primers interchangeably with regular ones when magnum primers were what was on the shelf.

I would crimp a bit lighter on the next batch, though. The SAAMI .45 ACP drawing indicates a case mouth diameter between .467"-.473". I would aim for somewhere between .469"-.471". Too much crimp will distort the bullet and may cause inaccuracy.

Those primers will work fine.

Your load is a bit light. I suggest trying 8 to 9 gr.

Blue Dot is good for making high velocity loads.

Most of us shoot medium velocity. For that something like TiteGroup or 231 would be a better choice of powder.

Definitely! I was gunna buy some tight group from whole sale. But they didnt have it in stock. Lol so i decided to try bluedot. I think my next step is 8 grains with a lighter crimp :) again. Thanks alot guys. This newb sure appreciates the imput. :)

Good to be cautious and ask for sure.

I agree the primers aren't an issue but would also side with those saying that Blue Dot isn't really the ideal powder for this situation. I've used it with great results in things like medium hot .44mag but 231 or Titegroup are what I'm currently using in 45acp and 9mm. It's still a case of use what you can find with pistol powder in some markets though.
Carefully approach the hotter end of the load data and results shouldn't be too bad. Lower pressure loads might be inconsistent with unburned powder.
Welcome to reloading!

i wonder if wholesale would take back unopened powder, it seems unlikely, i bought 3 pounds of blue dot. lol. go big or go home kind of sucks when you dont do your research lmao. oops. whats red dot like for .357 / 38 special ?

Unopened powder should be exchangeable for a more appropriate powder. if they don't have 231 or Titegroup, Reddot is a good choice for 38Spl and target load 357. It is a flake powder (like Blue Dot) and does not meter well in some throwers.

So i do have a .357 revolver. Would i be better off just reloading my .38s and .357s with red dot/blue dot ? Which would be best for .357 and .38 ? Thanks guys.

Blue Dot is good for max velocity loads in 45 and 357. If you try to down load it for medium power plinking or accuracy loads, it does not do as well as a faster powder like Red Dot, 231 or TiteGroup.

For 38Spl you really want a faster powder.

Keep a can of Blue Dot for high velocity giggles, and trade the rest of a faster powder.
