So here is the conundrum:
in developing loads for my 45 i took Hodgdon data and as i am using a 200gr plated bullet decided to start at 4.5gr of 231. shoot some over the chrony and way to slow (600ish). crank the dillon measure 1/4 turn and try some more (nice living only 7min from the range:D). a little faster now. do this a few more times till i reach my desired velocity of 825-850. sounds simple, eh? here is the problem: i am using 6.2gr of 231 to achieve this, waayyy over the book max of 5.6 for 200swc(900+fps) and 5.9 for a 200 jacketed (at 900+). primers are definitely not flat (not a suprise for 45acp) but the hot ones are a wee bit flatter that a control load of 5.3gr.

so the question of the day: do i load to the velocity i want or load to the max of 5.6gr?

what say ye nutters?

thanks

Seems accurate. i deveolped a 9mm load w 231 at the same time and the relationship to charge of powder/velocity is very close to the book. also shot some factory 230 over it and velocity was in normal range

just throwing this out there. A friend of mine had a very similar occurance. 230 gn bullets that were way too slow for their loads. Turned out those were undersized at 0.448", 0.449". Once he got a hold of proper size bullets, the speed went back to normal.

CamPro, got them from a dealer on the Lower Mainland. I did some more measuring and they are CRAP. not even round eg .4495", then turn em 90 degrees and they are
.4505". None even hit .451". Never again

Sounds like the bullets all right. In my STI Spartan, I chrono'd an average of 870 fps (Chrony @ 12') using 200 gr. Frontier CMJ truncated cone over 5.4gr. of 231 and Win.primers. I also have Bullet Barn 200 gr RNFP and recently got some Berry's 200 gr. 200gr RNFP but I haven't chrono'd those.

BTW where do you get 231/HP38 these days? I've been waiting for 8 mos. for Rusty Wood to get his shipment!
