i have been using 4.5gr of HP-38/w231 with a 230gr bullet (berry's and my own cast) for a while and have noticed i have black spec's all over my arms after 100 rounds. However that's only when i shoot it in my norinco 1911, in my tanfoglio i have no issue. i have tried hot loads, medium loads and light loads. same results with the 2 guns.

my thinking is that the norinco chamber is loose as compared to the tanfoglio and thus it cannot make a tight seal and i get incomplete ignition.

thoughts?

i size my lead bullets to .452" they cast at .454"

on the norc 1911 barrel, lands measure .443" and grove is .450"

on the tanfoglio i get .441" for the lands and .450" on the grove.

I thought I knew the answer until you posted this. I have found 231 to be very dirty with light loads, but much cleaner in hotter loads. If you got your results with a mid range load only I would say one gun had a much tighter chamber and barrel, generating higher pressures and burning cleaner. If it is happening with a range of loads it must be magic.;)

This is what I was thinking, I bet the Norinco has a looser chamber than the Tangfolio.

Spawn, have you noticed the brass that has been fired in the Norinco is dirtier on the outside than brass fired from the Tangfolio?

I had a brain fart yesterday and loaded 50 rounds at minimum loads using hp38. I will try tight group and see how that does.

I'm pretty sure the brass had a small amount of carbon near the rim with the same pattern each time from the norinco.
