This is the classic .45ACP revolver, IMO

Saturday (02/20/2010) I picked up the S&W M1917 "Fitz Special", .45 acp.
The barrel has been shortened to 3", rifling is sharp & smooth, front sight installed, grip frame has been rounded off, hammer bobbed (grooves cut into top of hammer), will shoot single & double action, lanyard ring hole on bottom of the grip frame has been plugged, and the trigger guard cut to a Fitz style. The grips do not appear to be original.
The S&W shoots very nice, shot 26 rounds 230gr FMJ. The sights are well regulated, and the trigger is real smooth. The Smith has some mechanical problems, but that will be addressed later.
Whoever customized this revolver, did a nice job. It also appears to have been done a long time ago.
Per Roy Jinks, the M1917, serial #126###, was shipped October, 1918.

Wheelgun in .45ACP....
I've had a S&W Model 25-2 [Model of 1955 Target] in .45 ACP / .45 Auto Rim with the 6.5" pinned barrel. One sweet wheelgun that I should've never parted with.
I wouldn't mind a S&W Model 625 with 5" barrel.

Hmmmm....love the idea of a SAA, but I was always under the impression that 45ACP and 45Colt are not interchangeable. Did I miss something?

It's not all that tiny, but really a manageable size. I can out-shoot my Springfield 1911 with this S&W. If it weren't for the price... I'd buy another one in stainless at the drop of a hat.

Interchangeable cylinders, like the Ruger Blackhawk convertibles. Colt as USFA both offer these too. I second the Model Of 1955 S&W, I have one, beautiful gun. I'd like to find a 4" version, but they are pretty unusual. A 1917 is a good choice, either S&W or the Colt New Service version, but keep in mind they are getting old. S&W did a modern version of theirs a couple of years ago, you may be able to find one around. 625 is a nice gun, particularly the 3" version, but the 5" will work well too for those lesser citizens with only restricted status. They did make a 4" as well. - dan
