.45ACP taper crimp/seating die issue

Firstly I'd like to start of by saying that I'm completely new to the world of reloading and I'm currently in the process of adjusting my hornady lnl ap press.

I have a small problem where when I run a case + bullet through the seating/taper crimp die the bullet gets a slightly visible ring running around its circumference although the seating depth and crimp are both correct. I was wondering if there would be any way to eliminate this ring or is it harmless?

what bullets are you using? what brand of die's are you use?

you may just have to re shape the bullet seating stem to fit the bullet your using.

Where on the bullet is this visible ring?

Do you have any pictures you could post?

A slightly visible ring is the key. If you can barely see it, it's nothing to worry about. Forget about it.

Sounds like spawn-inc has it. Your seating plug & bullet your using aren't a good match---most dies come with a couple different plugs.

Dies are hornady .45 acp dies with hornady taper crimp die
Bullets are hornady FMJ RN 230gr

Yep, your seater plug does not quite match the profile of your bullet. You can get a better fit if you use lapping compound to get your seater plug closer to the profile. It doesn't look to bad and I would just shoot them off.I get the same marks when I seat round nose rifle rounds with a spitzer seating plug.

My 44mag loads get the same thing, don't worry about it. Harmless.

If u can (gently) chuck the seater punch in an electric drill, drill press, or lathe; polish the inside bottom edge of the punch with 320, 400, 600 grit sandpaper, rounding and slightly widening the bottom opening. It's the first thing I do with any die set or caliber leaving marks.

And if it really bothers you some companies will make you a custom plug to fit that profile of bullet. The lapping/polishing route usually solves most of the problems, however.
