Hey everyone, Pretty new to this forum so i figured I would make my first post on somthing I need help with,

I was wondering if anyone else loads with Unique and if so, I have been loading 200gr TMJ bullets with 5.5 grains of unique which was kind of a quesstimate. They seem to cycle fine but havnt had a chance to set up some paper and check my groups.

Does anyone have a better load for me? without going out to buy new powder.

First of all, welcome to the site. A lot of good people here. As for your load info request, that's a bullet I haven't tried yet but a quick check in the Speer #13 manual, using the 200gr TMJ Match bullet and Unique, they list;
  • Suggested starting load of 6.5gr for a velocity of 860 f/sec
  • Maximum load listed of 7.3gr for a velocity of 984 f/sec

"...was kind of a guesstimate..." Don't ever guess. However, plated bullets use cast bullet data. My old Lyman book gives 5.0 to 7.2 of Unique for a 200 grain cast bullet. You must work up the load for your pistol.

I shoot cast, 230 gr, Speer bullets out of my 45 acp 6" barrel with great success. Charge is 5.5 gr, and 5.8 gr is max load. My groups are tight, no complaints. Always follow proper load data, unless you don't value your fingers or gun.

It was a quesstimate in the sense that I had only ever fired Hornady 230gr JHP with a heavier charge of Unique, But was Unable to find proper load data for a 200gr bullet, So i started low with a load that i knew wouldnt hurt.
Thanks for the info guys! Much appriciated, And according to the info the only thing i would change is maybe upping it another .5 of a grain. Thanks

be prepared for LOTS OF SMOKE-i've used unique and, brother , is it DIRTY- but the 6 grains is VALID

Only thing to do with unique is start a flash fire!!!!!!
Worst powder I ever used will never ever buy again!!!!!!
not being funny its pure crap as a reloader powder!!!

Strange?

I've burned at least 10 pounds of the stuff in 45 ACP and 9MM never had a problem, quite accurate with 225 lead flat points in the 1911...

Do not diss a powder because you are inapt at selecting the right powder for the right job.
I, for one, think Unique is a fantastic powder to work with.

Perhaps you could elucidate your concerns a bit, rather than a blanket rant that it is no good. I have used it for many years with great success in handguns from .44 down to .38 Special and 9mm. I have always had good, and predicted, velocities, good consistency and no complaints. So, why is it so bad? What have you been loading it in and what have you been trying to do with it?

Unique is named Unique because it works well in many pistol applications and it is so flexible you can use it for low velocity target loads and load high for close to magnum velocities. Because of this, it is also a forgiving powder in the sense that small incremental increases in powder weight does not raise pressures dramatically unlike some faster burning powders.

why do we bother to respond to aimless , ill informed, uneducated , goofy responces coming from obviously mentaly challenged individuals....yes unique is a little "dirty" but as anyone who actually loads knows it's a "must have" on the bench

Same here but only around 5lb of it through my .45, 9mm, .357, .303... I like it. 225Gr fp cast lead over 6gr of unique works well enough in my .45's that I have no desire to change.

Interesting, Unique is one powder I keep in generous supply. I find it useful for standard revolver loads, full power .45 Auto loads, and for reduced loads without fillers in a number or rifle cartridges. It does leave a residue on the guns, but thats why you clean em. Velocity is very consistent, even when there is much air space in the cartridge.

come shoot at my indoor range with your unique and you'll see how sooty it REALLY is- i use 231- which is a heck of lot cheaper both in terms of cost as well powder usage- and as well 231 serves my 9mm, and my 44 mag- granted they're 44 special loads, ( warm ones) and i don't end up doing a detail strip just to get all that black gunk out- and you'll make lots of friends calling folks "aimless, ill informed, uneducated , and goofy"- maybe some of us have been at this game 40 years and know a thing or 2

I find your comments on Unique to be somewhat interesting, I assume you have a long experience in the world of reloading....? How did you arrive at this conclusion ?

A bit of reading and research may show you that Unique powder has been around a very long time, has proven itself as one of the most versatile powders around, good for numerous pistol and rifle rounds....

Hell I started using Unique 50 years ago.... Still use it....
