I just came across a .45 acp seat-crimp RCBS die(1982) which seems to have a sharp crimp shoulder(not tapered), similar to roll crimp. Did rcbs have a different philosophy on crimping?

One of their Die Set was reportedly labelled for use with 3 calibers: .45 ACP, .455 Colt or Webley and (maybe?) .45 Colt.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I also have an RCBS 45 ACP carbide 3-die set (part # 18912), I would have bought it around the same time (early 80s). The seating die is the same as yours (i.e. no taper crimp).

Around the same time, I also bought a Lyman 9mm 3-die set, the seating die has the same construction (no taper crimp).
