45X70 vs 9.3X62

The 35Whelan is a great round and like you say RL-17 should wake it up some. Not sure I'd put it in the same class as the 375 H&H though.

Considering it's ballistics the 9.3 shouldn't be as good as it supposedly is, but there are a lot of guys in Africa that swear it is so.....I'd like to try it some day.

BTW Its been a while since I reloaded the Whelan, but it seems to me that 2450-2500fps was Max? 2800 out of a 250gr is hot 338 Win velocities.

I don't want to hijack this thread - there is one already with the Whelen and RL17 - the results were very impressive indeed! The 250 grain loads were really close to .338 Win Mag levels!

I have used the 9.3 x 62 with Barnes bullets with very good effect on many many larger African animals. Did it do something that nothing else would do? naw - it was there and did its job well.
I do think it is a great round and a little better than a 35 Whelen- just my own thoughts.

However, for Yukon, close up, protection work (rather the hunting use) it is my thought that a good load of 45-70 is more effective. The 9.3x62 can reach out further and I would not hesitate to use it on large, large animals.

But a close work, short bbl, protection weapon should be a bigger bore and the 45 has that going for it. And you dont loose much with a shorter bbl.

BTW - not to hijack -but the 9.3x64 IS a wonderful round that I prefer over any 375. Great range and hittinh power in a non-belted, standard length package.

In a converted Mauser, I'd handload 350gr Speer Hot-Cors, Nosler Partitions, Barnes Originals or an X Bullet and be very very comfortable.
