It's based on the 460 weatherby. Here's a clip from some reloading website:
460 A-Square Short Better balanced than the .458 Win Mag it gives outstanding performance without the squirrelly pressure problems of the .458.Notes: This is another of the cartridges that Colonel Arthur Alphin developed after his run-in with a Cape Buffalo in Africa. This round is based on the .460 Weatherby case, with a slight neck. The cartridge is the same length as the .458 Winchester Magnum, but has better ballistics and power. Bullets are heavy and round-nosed, but achieve terrific velocities. However, recoil can be brutal.

Nominal Size: 11.6x64mm

Actual Size: 11.63x63.5mm

Sounds like an interesting project for that spare P14 action in the drawer!:D

Toying with a new big-bore rifle, and would like to achieve 458 Lott #'s in a standard length cartridge. I'm thinking of picking up a Remington 798 in 458 WM and having it re-chambered to 460 A-Square. This might be a little overboard, as these rifles weigh just over 7 lbs. Anyone have a suggestion for a similar combo/setup?

Do you have a reamer available? They seem hard to obtain. I guess a guy can order specialty dies thru RCBS for this cartridge too?

I believe the the rem 798 in 458 has the 3.7" action, if so you would be better off just re-chambering to the lott.

Yes the CZ 550 is the long action, and can be re-chambered to the 460wby.
If you want a stanard action, maybe consider the ruger mk11, though I think you will only get 2 of those rnds in the mag box.Another one to consider is the 375 dakota necked up to .458", it would fit the standard rugermk11 action.Brass is easy to buy and it will push the 500gr over 2300fps.It will be a fun project keep us posted

It was supposed to be used by the “porters” as a back up gun that wouldn’t blow their collar bone into bits and pieces (porter would weigh 95 pounds and the recoil of the Weatherby was undo able)
But the way i understand it and had my reloading dies custom made for a new set of 460 Weatherby
We took 120 thousands off the full length sizing die and bullet seating die as well (don’t hold on the exact number)

460 Weatherby (I think my dies had to be shorten .120 thousands both the full size die and seat for
(Don’t hold me to the 120.current watching a lady sleep peacefully and no way I’m going to wake
To tell her i need the safe room key because my sons have mine
