I'm thinking of picking up a Remington 798 in 458 WM and having it re-chambered to 460 A-Square. This might be a little overboard, as these rifles weigh just over 7 lbs. Anyone have a suggestion for a similar combo/setup?
It was supposed to be used by the “porters” as a back up gun that wouldn’t blow their collar bone into bits and pieces (porter would weigh 95 pounds and the recoil of the Weatherby was undo able)It's based on the 460 weatherby. Here's a clip from some reloading website:
460 A-Square Short Better balanced than the .458 Win Mag it gives outstanding performance without the squirrelly pressure problems of the .458.Notes: This is another of the cartridges that Colonel Arthur Alphin developed after his run-in with a Cape Buffalo in Africa. This round is based on the .460 Weatherby case, with a slight neck. The cartridge is the same length as the .458 Winchester Magnum, but has better ballistics and power. Bullets are heavy and round-nosed, but achieve terrific velocities. However, recoil can be brutal.
Nominal Size: 11.6x64mm
Actual Size: 11.63x63.5mm
Sounds like an interesting project for that spare P14 action in the drawer!![]()

I've owned both the Lott and the 450 Ackley, which would be my choice. Let's you use 458 Win Mag, 458 Lott and 450 Ackley like 22 short, 22 long and 22 long rifle in the same gun. - danI believe the the rem 798 in 458 has the 3.7" action, if so you would be better off just re-chambering to the lott.
