Put together some starter loads, and also have some old "elephant" boxed factory ammo in case these are too tame ;)

500gr Hornady RN
115grs IMR4350
Fed #215
3.710 COL

Hope to get out to the range soon. Mounted a Leupold 1-4x.

That's the same load I've used in mine. Tomorrow's project is to load up some 500 grn gas checked cast boolits. Got some zombie mule does living in my bale stacks.

LOL, the ultimate zombie buster!

Is yours a Mk V? What kind of accuracy and velocity are you getting with this load? I was reading that this is the highest recommended load for the Hornady as the bullet is too soft.

I don't envy you at all.
I fired a 460 a few times off the bench some years ago, and remember that it was very unpleasant.

Sweet Baby Jesus!

I opened up this thread thinking it was about 460 S&W Mag loading, almost fell out of my chair.

Wow, feeling so unmanly right now.

Please let us know how it works out.

Mine is in a Ruger #1, started out as a 458 wm. Magnaported. Iron sites. I've toyed with the idea of a 4x scope but haven't tried one yet. I haven't cronied any of them yet. It has been on the to do list for over a year. Best I can do is about 3" at 100yds.

I assume yours is a MK V? What are you getting for velocity and accuracy? I guess the question on the bullet is too soft for what? It should handle darn near anything on the planet, minus the big 5 and blue whales. It's hell on herefords.

Mine is no where near as unpleasant as you may think. It isn't for the recoil sensitive, but is very managable. I've fired smaller far less pleasant cartridges than this one. Firing it hunkered down on a bench probably isn't the best idea, haven't tried that one yet. The range I belong to has a stand up bench for playing with the boomers.

My plinking load was 118 grs. of 760 with the 350 X. Good for water jugs, stumps, you know that kinda thing.

That rifle is now digesting 117 grains of H4350 topped up with a 405 grain remington bulk slug. Accuracy is 1.25 inches off the SIT DOWN bench and yup it definately snaps.Actually its not a snap but more of a serious punch...

Yes, an older Mk V with the pendleton brake. I haven't fired it over the chrono yet, but this load should do 2500fps. I read that the Hornady can come apart over 2500fps, but aim to test that out soon :)

I will have to check the log book, I think I was getting 2525fps with that load. I also tried RL15 I think and it was about the same speed when the case was full. I made the mistake to put 10grs over my usuall load in and it was all good. Not many cases you can do that with. That load was at max in one book and a hair over in most. Recoil was brisk. I settled for 110gr of 4350 with the 450gr bullet at 2450fps. Easier on the body if you want to shoot more than 6 rounds. Everyone I let shoot the 460 came away smiling.
If you didn't shave the day you shot it the gun would push your stubble back into your face. Only with the bigbores

Yes, I would appreciate any load information you have. I was reading that RL19 is supposed to be a good powder also. I figure the brass should last much longer with the 2500fps load, and less punishing too!

Did you shoot it off the bench, or standing? I am thinking of picking up a shooting stick. The Stoney Point Safari Stix II seems like the ticket.

Shot one a few years ago, a Mark V. Heavy - good thing. Wasn't as bad as I expected and in fact it was easier to shoot than a .375 W'by which I shot once - one shot - and swore I'd never do it again. Recoil was like nothing I ever experienced before, and I'm not particularly recoil shy. It was the speed the thing came back that shocked me - back and up and that purty rollover combed cheekpiece did what it's designed to do and that's to sprain your face. Wore a lopsided grin for days only it wasn't a grin, and anytime I was asked a question for a while the answer was "Huh? You phay sumpfin?" Man, what a muzzle blast. Never ever again.

I take it you meant the .378Wby? Yes, it is a very fast recoil. I owned one without a brake, and it came back fast!
