Have just started playing with a S & W 460 Revolver. Factory Hornady rounds with a 200 grain slug are fast and accurate but want to try 250, 260, and 300 grain slugs for more fun and effect. Is anyone else trying the same thing? Load info appreciated.
Carry on!

I have just aquired a .460 XVR with 8.3" barrel but have yet to light the cannon up as the factory ammo is near impossible to get in Canada if at all.Same goes for the brass as there are only 2 manufacturers being Hornady and Starline,Starline being the prefered as it shows a high degree of quality control as when you examine new unprimed brass the flash hole is already qualified by means of a taper induced by a flash hole unifier.Have just assembled some loads using Starline brass,Win. Lg. Rifle,Magnum primers and Hornady 250 gr. SST bullets(originally a muzzleloader saboted bullet) minus the cannelure.I've applied a cannelure using a tool made by CH4D that I borrowed as the jacket wall thickness is .050 according to a Hornady tech. I spoke to on their hot-line who also confirmed that is very useable for the .460 as long as a heavy crimp is attainable. This SST bullet is absolutely the longest workable for overall length at 2.330 which just happens to be the exact cylinder length by co-incidence.Load data was downloaded from the Hogdon website and I'm just a few days away from it's first range session.Cabelas stocks all the components as well as the Hornady 200 gr. SST factory loading at 2300 ft/sec. with the longer 10.6" barrel.Powders suited to this cartridge are H-110,H-4227(my choice for the first loads). The choice of primer is dictated by the brand of brass,Starline using lg.rifle mag and Hornady (unsure) but apparently something other than lg rifle. Will post a new thread when data is in from first range session.Be sure to tighten the muzzle brake accordingly or you'll have a very undesireable result.Good luck

In my last statements regarding primers in the .460 S&W ,I have just noticed an error I made about primers where both the Starline and Hornady brass use large rifle primers.Sorry for the confusion.

I was, and still am, thinking of eventually getting a 460. In preparation, I contacted Hornady and they sent me three pages of reload info. In addition, I have two more pages of 460 reload info. If you're interested, send me your e-mail address and I'll scan and send them to you.

The new "x" frame from the S&W brain trust has really upped the "COOL" factor this time with .460 and .500 cartridges where I've only fondled the .500 but loaded and fired the .460 earlier this week rendering me a happy camper. You know as conversations go,talking about these new monsters is one thing but being behind them when they ignite is quite another.Viagara definitely NOT required here as we were very much alert and erect for that session!

Cabela's stocks the dies and .460 brass but getting the brass or any components into Canuckistan can be a problem not having the appropriate export permit as the U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs will and do make spot checks on the U.S. side prior to your exiting the states.Having a U.S. mailing address unfortunately is only half the solution.Must be mighty carefull.

I bought some supply from a gunsmith out here in the Saskatchewan flat land Called Rayner shine gunworks in Lancer Saskatchewan (Doug and Fran) I was under the impression it was Winchester brass and Hornady XTP/MAG 300 grn and 240 grn
Very good folk to deal with typical of Saskatchewan people.

Be careful about the bullet selection as I read on the smith wesson forum a fella used XTP with out the MAG suffex and pushed the guts out. I personally loaded some 454 casull brass with 38 grns of H110 behind a 240 grn XTP/MAG with 1950 FPS as a result. 460 loads before weekend assuming the componets arrive in time. Starline brass is on order as well but is a least 10 days away.
Very fun gun to shoot even with the hot 454. I expect the 460 to have a noticable increase in recoil and awaiting the thrill.

My .460 is on it's way, so I dug up this thread again to see if any of you guys have come up with any "reduced recoil" loads for this cannon. It would be great if you could share any data you have. PM me the info if you do not care to make it public.

thanks!

I have a 500 S&W and was thinking of 'possibly' getting a 460. The 7th edition Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading has some info and I haven't checked but the Beartooth Bullets website probably has some as well. Prior to publication of Hornadys 7th edition I contacted Hornady and they sent me the requested data on the 460. If you're really strapped for reload info, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you a scan of some of what I have.
I would imagine people like John Taffin of the American Handgunner have also tested and documented loads for it. I contacted them when I first got my 500 and they were more than helpful.
