Was down at DVC in Port Coquitlam tonight with a, now former, anti to fore off my 9mm. Well a fellow CGNer comes up beside us with a 460 S&W AND a 500!!! That thing is a monster. My wife asked to see his heat and he stopped shooting to show us all what all he had. AND to my grateful surprise, he offered to let me fire off a round in the 460. OMFG that thing is just insane!! Surprisingly little recoil but a shockwave like an artillery cannon. My former anti friend had her ten year old son there and he had the hugest smile i've ever seen after seein ol' uncle Mikey fire it. Just wanted to let everyone know about it cause it was such a cool thing to shoot. ANYONE who gets a chance should fire one at least once. And after seeing all the good will and comradery amongst us gunnnies, and after shooting a few rounds herself, she now wants a gun herself!!! And to think yesterday, she hated guns lol Thanks again Mooses

Had the chance to shoot a 460S&W, a couple of weeks ago.
The owner let me fire of a couple of rounds of 45Colt, 454 Casull and 460 S&W.
All factory loads.
45 Colt cartridges were nice and mild.
454 Casull had a very manageable recoil.
But the shockwave of the 460 overpowered any preceived recoil!
I'd love to have one of these.
Just don't think I'd feed it a steady diet of 460 factory loads,
even if I could afford it.
It's owner wants to also get a BFR in 45-70.
Sucker for punishment??

Yeah at 3 bucks a round I couldn't afford it, but damn if I could I guarranty I would get one just for sheer cool factor. Your friend sounds like one cool dude

I got a 460V just last month. Great gun!

I agree it's more blast than recoil. The compensator does it's job well. It does get alot of attention though with it's blast and the way it spits fireballs.

Last time I had it out as I was packing up a fellow member came over and asked me about it. So of course I went back to the line and unboxed it for him.

I offered to let him shoot it. He seemed so excited that I'd let him. He wanted to pay me for the shot, and ran back over with a $10. I didn't want to take anything but he was insistant that I did. After I told him they're not that pricey he asked if he could shoot it twice. I guess most people think it costs more than it does. After a brief explanation of the actual pricing I gave him a full cylinder worth of ammo. The Hornady 200gr I've been using works out to $2/shot after tax. I highly doubt I'd use the lighter calibres in it. I didn't get it for the mild stuff. If I want lighter loads I have other guns for that.

Long story short I met a new range buddy and put a smile on someone's face!

The bad thing though is S&W has discontinued the 5" model, so if anyone is considering it and wants a 460 with a shorter than 8 3/4" barrel get one now while there is still some available.

Sounds exactly like what happened with me, I offered to pay for the shot, which he said was about three bucks, but he wouldnt accept it. And now I got me a new range buddy:) I can see the ad now "The S&W 460, the friendmaker"

Anyone into these big arm shorteners is crazy if they don't get into reloading for them. With reloading the cost comes down to around $1.20 a pop for the .500S&W. And it's only that high because of the cost of the fairly special bullets which run up around 70 cents each. Right in with rifle bullet costing. A .460 can use the heavier weight .452 bullets same as used in the .45Colt and .454Casull loadings.

Of course both sizes will come down in cost a lot if you get into casting your own gas check lead bullets. But that's a bit more outlay of setup and time.

At any rate the point is that they don't need to break the bank account or prevent you from putting food on the table if you reload for them.

People always tell me that I must be paying an arm and a leg to shoot the 460V but are always surprised when I tell them how much the cost is per round. I don't have the space or time to reload so I can only shoot factory.

Here's the breakdown:

Factory ammo, Hornady FTX 200gr red-tips, $280 x HST = $314 for 200 rounds (10 boxes). I usually order from Reliable as it's cheaper if you order in bulk.

Cost per round = $314/200 = $1.57

I then sell the brass after shooting 100 rounds for about $50, so I get 50 cents back per round.

$1.57-.50 = $1.07 per round. I usually shoot 20 rounds (1 box) every other weekend, or sometimes a couple weekends in a row depending on what I feel like shooting that week.

Cheaper than shooting 3" slugs.

It's really not that bad at all shooting factory with the 460V and a hella cheaper than .50AE ($2.50~$3) or .500S&W ($3+). This isn't a gun that you'll want to shoot hundreds of rounds per session anyway. For me, 20 rounds of fireballs is more than enough for s**ts and giggles, and the Hornady FTX red-tips have plenty of that!

I own a 5" 460V which has had nothing but full house 460 through it. It's never fired a single 45 colt or 454 round. I love to shoot it and my Handloads with 250gr XTP's and 2400 bark pretty good too...... I sold my BFR when I bought the 460 as the 460 is a lot more fun to shoot and not nearly as painful. My 10" BFR 45/70 just plain hurt to shoot..... :D

I went with the 500 when;) it 'came available'. For this and for the 460, especially with any amount of shooting, handloading is a must. I've posted this previously but anything I've put through it, cast or jacketed and heavy or light loads, it all shoots well. With heavy loads, it is a 'handfull' and even the Hogue grips it came with left a lot to be desired. A modified set of Jordan Trooper stocks by Herrett's, made for my model 29, has made the recoil of the 500 a little more bearable.

I shot 3 rounds out of a guys 460 that i met at the range. Holy COW! Want a bang, decent recoil for sure but not painfull, unless you shoot a lot i guess. He had been shooting a bit before and we couldnt get the brass to extract, was too hot i guess, expanded in the cylinder chambers, had to let it cool off to get them out.

One for sale on the EE if you want to pay more then new. I know Deselins has one for sale for 1300 something.

holy s**T no kidding $1750?? with a bunch of handloads... uhhh no thanks :p

I can't find the DeSelins website! I know I was on it a long time ago, what happened to it?!
