470 capstick

...a 458 Lott seems lacking compared to something else in a different caliber....

For the 470 just the 500gr FMJ and SN ?? As you know, several 458 bullet and factory ammo choices so the 458 Lott is definitely worth a 2nd look.

By lacking I meant I already have several 458 caliber rifles in several platforms. Adding the Lott is just another bolt gun a bit faster. I don't really need to go faster than my 458 wm. I stayed with the starting load of 72 gr H4895. 50 yards I put 3 in the same hole. Figured I couldn't do better than that. I've played with 300 gr and 500 gr bullets as well. The 500 gr bullets shoot high and left. Any 400-405 gr shoot same poi as do the 300 gr hollow points depending on velocity they only raise slightly. A 470 capstick is just different and that alone is reason enough to be interesting. Once I find a load for a rifle I generally stay with it for hunting rifles anyway. No one will argue that a 470 caliber isn't good for blackies over bait or in the blue berry patches

Although that 400 hh is leading me away from the 470
As it turns out I maybe getting the action from my buddy for just refinishing some of his guns and the use of my truck to pull a trailer fair deal in my books.

The .400 H&H Magnum has serious cool factor and is unique. Although in practical terms it performs about the same as the .416 Rem. Mag. (H&H 104 gr case capacity vs. RM 107 gr) and .416 bullet choices are more plentiful than .411 bullet choices. Plus .416 RM factory ammo and brass are readily available.

I love the ruger but it doesn't fit me at all. I really wanted the African model but didn't like the way it felt. Wasn't sure I wanted to risk buying it and ordering a Boyds stock as I was told the Boyds stock followed a similar lop and comb height and grip angle. That was before I found a couple buddies that can do stock work. I have a 416 Taylor in the works once I get my other 300 back from a buddy. He's going thru a rough time so ill get it back after this coming hunting season. The 400 has really got me interested though. Several companies make 411 bullets. Could a zastava 375 hh be re barreled to the 400hh with no other mods? Or would a true magnum length be needed?

I got my 375 H&H Magnum Zastava Full Stock Carbine re-barreled to 416 Rem. Mag. Mine functions just fine. Also got it properly glass bedded to prevent the stock from splitting under the heavier recoil.

Should work fine, it's the same basic case. - dan

Limited on .411 bullets compared to .416. Hornady has .410 400gr DGX & DGS, and .411 300gr IL. Woodleigh has .411 400gr RN SN and .410 400gr FMJ. Barnes has .411 300gr. Not sure why .410??

Way more selection in .416. Always excellent terminal performance with 350gr Speer Mag Tip, 300gr TSX, 350gr TSX/SOL and Hornady 400gr RN.

But whatever. Greater cool factor with the .400 H&H Magnum.

BB..........you could always just get a 375 H&H rebored by Ron Smith as well to make your 400 H&H. I'm like you...I work up a good load for the bullet I want to use in a given caliber/cartridge/rifle and after that I don't care if there are 300 more bullet options in that caliber.
If I were to buy a 475 Ackley/470 Capstick reamer are you seriously interested in one?

.416 caliber advantages as I see it: VLD bullets available in .416 caliber such as the 340gr CEB MTH. Equipped with a ballistic reticle scope it's a viable heavy game stomper out to extended ranges. Greater versatility than a .411. No supply issues since several manufacturers make a variety of bullets in .416 caliber.

Some bullets shoot more accurately than others in any given rifle. Some bullets shoot like crap. So a better chance of developing an accurate load if there's a wide selection of bullets to choose from.

Test Rounds for Accuracy

It’s a well known fact that some rifles shoot poorly until fed one specific load. Something about the combination of powder charge and bullet shape/weight/construction combine to maximize accuracy. Finding this load should be every hunter’s first step toward hunting and shooting precision. And here’s how to do it.

First, select your three or five favorite loads/bullets and buy a box of each. To save $, just get two at a time and pit the winner against a new load later. Use the excess “inaccurate” loads for field practice. Don’t be afraid to get bullets heavier and lighter than you might prefer. Game animals rarely notice the difference between 130, 140, 150 and 160-grain bullets, but your rifle might...

Following that logic, the 470 capstick is just sending a 500 grain bullet a little bit faster too. Why don't you step way up and get in the realm of the 505 gibbs?

It is something i am interested in for sure. Dont know when itll be financially possible as i have a couple projects on the go right now and between my new phone and the tires i just bought i just dropped $2600.
This only became an idea because the action came up.
