Hey guys,

I just inherited Grandpa's Winchester Model 94. It's been stored in a closet for probably 40 years. No idea when it was last fired, probably 40+ years. My question is, what, if anything, must I do before taking it to the range? Should it get checked out by a gunsmith first?

Give it a good clean and you might also want to check the firing pin moves freely. I just recently had one that hadn't fired in twenty years and the oil they used had turned into the consistency of treacle and had seized the firing pin. Took me several hours to free it.
 
Find a good youtube video on how to strip, clean and reassemble a '94.

I've done it so often I can do it in my sleep.
It's not quite as easy as the same operation on a Marlin 336/1895 but once you've done it once or twice no problem.

Make sure you have a good set of gunsmiths screw drivers.
You don't want to be buggering those old screw heads and the screws could be very tight after all those years.
 
Get a cartridge for it, pull the bullet, dump the powder, place the primed brass in the chamber, close the action, pull the trigger... open the lever... what happened?
