Just picked up a nice 303 sporter, it is marked Longbranch #4mk1*, I am just curious about what the * means?

The star denotes minor change(s) from the MkI standard. In the case of the No4 MkI* the most obvious change is from a push button bolt head release at the rear of the receiver to the bolt head removal slot at the front of the boltway in the MkI*.

Personally I prefer the LB style bolt head removal over the British system. It was cheaper but also better IMHO.

Yeah and the head I have is a #1 so I believe if there is ever a headspace issue I could go to a #2.

A 2 then a 3, but I doubt you'll ever need to.
