They aren't customs fees, they're taxes the same as you'd pay at your local shop. My experience is 50/50, but I always expect to pay it. If it slides through, its a bonus.

Ok, but the bill stated custom fees.

Customs is a division of the CCRA, a tax collection agency. Six in one, half dozen in the other. All BS if you ask me. I buy #### out of country so I don't have to pay our BS taxes. Makes me proud to say I declared nothing the last time I returned from the US, but ended up with several hundred dollars worth of goods.w:h:

Its may state customs fee but depending on province it will vary. For instance in Quebec we pay 5% on one of those taxes. Sorry I can never remember which one is which. (Theres an S and T in the name, I think)

I agree with Blargon expect to pay and the rest s a bonus.

This place does look like an interesting option for purchases. I think I'm about ready to order another Sightron. I may just go with a Canadian supplier though even if it will cost me a couple of hundred extra.

I have to admit the CGN mantra of buy Canadian has a lot to be said for it. Growing up for me it was always buy British. It meant something. But that was before Thatcher and the help she gave to finally destroying British manufacturing. Us Brits don't hear that too much now. But I digress.

Here's a breakdown of costs;
Cabelas
$529.95
$19.95 S&H
$71.49 HST
$621.49 total

4Scopes
$388.88
$37.54 S&H including exchange
$60.13  Customs fee
$486.55 total  For a difference of $134.94

Yes I got nailed with custom fees but the Cda Post guy even said that was rare, like 1 in 100 and USPS was a better choice for shipping.

http://www.thefinalcost.com/shipments/calculate/ seems to be a useful utility for calculating the various costs involved. Some stuff is not really worth it though. I priced out what a SIII 10-50x60 FCH and it came out to about $1150 all in. Mystic charges $1120 + $30 S&H (high guess), all times 1.05 for tax and your only at $1207. That extra 5% is worth it to be absolutely sure that warranty is covered, and avoid having to ship it back and forth over the border if the scope conks out.

Kinda defeats the whole purpose of buying a high end scope if you assume it to fail

Wrong, CCRA doesn't exist anymore, it was split up into CBSA(Customs) and CRA(Revenue). That said, I don't disagree with the remainder of your post. :)

I stand corrected. Although tax collection is their primary role, national "security" via CBSA is a joke at best.:D

No doubt some optics aren't a real savings from 4scopes, but others are. It pays to shop around.

I'd watch their pricing on some optics...their price on the SIII 8-32x56LRTD/TDT is listed as $48.88 more than I paid at my local gun shop after tax...other scopes are for sure a great deal though!!
