Firstly, what rifle, what scope budget? What are you looking to achieve at 500? Do you handload or buy premium ammunition? A 50mm objective will only get you more light gathering ability. For long distance shooting, glass clarity will be more important.
A rifle designed for hunting won't be a good 500m target rifle, as different features are desirable. Additionally, you generally want lower magnification for hunting as most big game is shot at less than 100m. This does change based on local geography, but a target scope and a hunting scope are two very different animals.
