I have a bunch of LAR-15 10 round mags for my AR but was thinking of picking up some 5/20 or 5/30 mags for fun. Not much difference in price and some like the 5/20's for bench or prone shooting but thought I'd ask if the fine knowledgeable CGN'ers if they had a preference?

If you'll be using them from pouches then as Modavo said get 5/30, if not then 5/20 are better for bench and prone.
I prefer pmags to LAR mags because I am a reloader and the plastic doesn't scratch the brass as much. I also don't do mag dumps and don't really care if I have to reload a little more often, it's good practice and makes your changes faster.

There is of course also the look cool factor the 5/30's have but it's just more empty space there teasing you.
When the zombies come and the rivets fall out a 5/30 will also be better :p

Coupled LAR15 mags. That way I get 120 rounds on my belt when im ready to rock and roll. Its long enought that its easy to get out of the tacos.

I have a soft spot for my ATRS pistol mags when I do precision shooting.

Coupled LAR15 are the same size as a regular 30 rounds magazine. Easy to get from regular pouch.

I do have a good supply of 5/30 though

Personally waiting on my first AR15 its in the mail!! but i have only gotten 5/30 mags so far mainly because of the price for me although christmas i hope to get some 10 round! maybe agood sale i can get a few with the mag floor plate coupler!

I find the 20's to be perfect, the 30's and larger are a problem for mobility and stabilized shooting such as a bench. I have changed out my AR-15 gear many times but I still have my Colt 20's from 25 years ago.

The only real argument against the 5/30 is that you need to hold a higher position.

Since 5/20s are shorter than pistol grip, you can get a bit lower.

Sometimes even shooting from a rest or bipod can be a problem with 5/30's if it isn't high enough.

I prefer the length of the 30-round magazines because they are easier to remove from pouches and can be used as a monopod for prone shooting.

5/30s really assist in position shooting. As mentioned, they serve as a monopod in prone. Sitting and kneeling, the rifle can be positioned with the magazine on one side of the knee, the grip on the other. Stable. Standing, the magazine can be positioned on a magazine pouch as a support.
