5.45 x 39 AR conversion for cheap ammo ?

The current price of 5.56 at $520/1000 or so, makes range time expensive.

5.45 x 39 Russian surplus, designated 7n6, may be available at substantial savings.
Would a large number of shooters be interested in converting to the 5.45 if ammo if ammo was available?
Calibre conversion kits run at about $400 USD. Irunguns may be a good source to import these kits.

If an importer could bring this ammo in for good price, I would definitely be in for a conversion to 5.45.

I'd be more interested in a dedicated 5.45 rifle. Something like a NR VZ-58 in 5.45 would sell well if a company decided to import surplus ammo for it as well as the rifles.

I'm not interested in any registered rifle. But that's just me, others would be all over this.
 
I would love to get my hands on a 5.45 upper if we could get access to the inexpensive surplus ammo... I picked up a 7.62x39 AR for just this reason, but even feeding it is getting more expensive. The 5.45 seems to be a fair bit less.
 
It's a moot point given the time and expense involved in getting any surplus ammo approved for import, the continuing crisis in Ukraine and Russia's involvement in Syria. Supply lines of 5.45mm "surplus" are drying up for now and prices in the USA continue to rise. It may be a practical option in the future, but I honestly don't think we're ever going to see it happen with its primary platform, the AK-74 prohibited in Canada. A few hundred AR conversion kits aren't going to entice an ammo distributor to make the investment. If you want to shoot relatively inexpensive surplus ammo in the AR platform, your best bet is to purchase one of the recently released dedicated 7.62x39mm AR rifles like the CMMG, second choice-- 7.62x39mm upper and buy as much ammo as you can and stack it deep.
 
I don't see this happening in Canada and even if this ammo was widely available elsewhere, by the time it hit Canada with the currency exchange there would be little to no savings. Phil.
