5.45mm and Ballistics Discussion (and Russian M4's).

I find it interesting that the really old rounds - .303 and 7.92 create their maximum cavities right in the optimum penetration range, maybe those old guys knew something after all. Given what they had to work with, it's amazing how well those rounds test.

pecker-- there was a US Medic hit with a 7.62x54R AP round in the ESAPI -- he went on to work on the guy who hit him -- he had bruising but that was it.

Your not getting first round pen at point black on an ESAPI /w the x54 AP round - let alone M43 or 200m.

So for shorty ARs its best to go as heavy as possible and keep the range short? Do all boatails yaw and roll on impact because of design?

Are the air tip rounds just FMJs with small cavities in the nose parts?

thanks for the info.

It all depends on what you want to do.

If your shooting a lot of people in cars the mid-weight bonded bullets do better. Same with thru glass shots.

For hunting a SP or other bullet that will give large frontal section but stay together (fragments ruin more meat) is what you want.

If your shooting armoured cars (and some insurgents do UA vehicles) then an AP bullet (M995 Black Tip in 5.56mm) is best.
(M995 is not available outside the US Mil/DOD -- and a lot of "Black" Tip for sale in the US etc is a M855/SS109 bullet that a manufacturer had a black tip put on it (one of the European countries -- cant recall what).

thanks, ill see what I can find to try out. Havent seen any of ammo above 80grains for sale around here. I think the Tap 77 stuff is available alot though. For economics Ive been using just 55 and 62 fmjs.

I heard about that company painting the tips black for show only.

Do you think it pretty much looks like the 5.56mm is here to stay for a very long time?

The 6.8 or the 6.5 dont seem to be taking off do they?

As for the original 5.45 in this thread..ive never seen any of the stuff for sale...
