5.45x39 ???

Trade Ex Canada has some. 25$ for 50 rounds. I know it is expensive, but if demand came up, maybe better prices would ensue. I think it is called .22 Hi power as well.

The .22 hi-power is a rimmed cartridge... 5.6x52R

I would build a Stevens in this calibre if I could find reasonably cheap ammo. Mind you, $25 for 50 rounds is as cheap as some American eagle .223 I've seen.

I still have 5.45 Soviet ammo left over from the Good ol' Days (when we were actually allowed to use OUR legally bought and paid for property). I'm thinking of doing a bolt action conversion to 5.45 soviet.

The question is, take a 223 caliber barrel and rechamber it (it's diameter is .224 and the 5.45 bullet diameter is .221"), and have it "rattle" down the barrel?

OR would a heavy barrel 22 rimfire barrel rechambered to this caliber (if I can find an appropriate twist) be better (as in a tighter bore) i.e. is a 22 rimfire .220" diameter???

I think you'd just be better off importing a barrel from europe or russia, as it's a common caliber there. Probably easier to import from there than the US:(

Can a 22LR (rechambered barrel) take the pressure of that round? Even if it is a HBAR?

Regarding a 223 rechamber---I doubt you'd find a chamber reamer in Canada. Also , FYI
some of the Polish "tantals" sold in the US had .223 barrels on them. They shot ok until they heated up, and then people reported keyholing taking place.

Just some more things to consider....good luck if you go thru with the conversion project!

Good ideas....obviously I haven't thought much about this yet. I'll let you know how it goes.....

Then again, I can just buy one of those East German bolt actions from someone, eh?

In Europe and in Russia it barrels are restricted parts, so importing a barrel from Europe will be on the same level of difficulty as importing the whole gun

Yikes:eek: That's not what I wanted to hear!:bangHead:

Sounds like a job for the "I" (for import) Team :) (a play on the A-Team). "In 1975, a specialized US Army import outfit was convicted of import violations that they didn't commit. Since then, they've been operating as independent importers-for-hire in the underground. If you've got a (import) job, and no one else will help, you can call the I-TEAM!!!!!! (Play A-Team theme music here) :)

If there was such a thing, I have a feeling they'd do well here.

what about a cz 858 in 5,45? then get some of that cheapo surplus they have in the US approved for sale here and your good to go

True, it's a chicken versus egg scenario. I know there are 5.45 uppers for sale for AR-15's down south, and that ammo is really cheap there. But most of it isn't/hasn't been approved here apparently.

A couple of guys were nice enough to mention earlier that Trade-ex has 5.45 ammo on their site. I gotta ask them how much of it they have in stock and how reliable future supply is.

You can get a caliber specific reamer from companies that make them for wildcat shooters and developers. Just send them the cartridge diagram and specs, and they'll make it for you.

Then you can do try finding a barrel close to the true .220-.221" bullet diameter and rechamber, or as you said try a 223 barrel. If you never clean it, it'll eventually foul up and narrow down to the diameter you want!:). :)).---just kidding!

Apparently the Trade ex ammo was a one time buy/in stock item (I wonder if it's stuff left over from when Century was in Kanada).

I have to price out and see if it's worth doing a conversion in this round, for the amount of ammo I have on hand.
