5.56 ammo

whats everyones opinion on IVI 62grain 5.56 ammo (accuracy, reliability) I would be shooting it from a stag with a 16in barrel 1to9 twist. Also how much should someone pay for it? (50 cents a shot?) is it more desirable over UMC, S&B, PMC and AE ammo. And my last question is how available are tracer rounds for 5.56?

I didnt' think IVI 62gr or C77 Ball was available for civy sales?
Should be similar stats to any SS109 you see.

Buy it while you see it.
 
the guy told me that there was a batch sold that didn't work well with the machine guns because the barrels got to hot and the bullet didn't stay together, so they were sold to civilian because they are just fine in semi auto rifle???:confused: I know its he said she said but I just thought I would chec to see if it was good accurate ammo over the ones listed above because it wores out to 46cents a round. (which I thought wasn't bad for 62 grain) They all come on 10 round stripper clips and a tool to load the mags.(kinda conviniant)

46 cents a round is a little on the high side for stolen ammo. You can purchase ligitimately aquired ammo for a little more.

I'd personally stay away from it. When did Canada stop surplusing ammo? It's been decades hasn't it?

Apparently the CF use to distribute IVI to the DCRA and PRA's for use in service rifle matches. Some of the PRA's then turned around and sold some of it instead, which pretty much killed the entire free ammo for service rifle thing.

What year is it? It'll be stamped on the base of the cartridge, along with IVI and the nato mark.

I'd point the finger at Chretiens Liberal DND budget cuts as the cause of the PRA ammo supply ending more than some ammo getting sold. It was described at the time as a budget saving move.

They cut out education funding for CF members at the same time, not because members were selling their degrees. ;)

To the OP, if this was ammo that was sent to the states due to unacceptable dispersion, then you shouldn't expect much better results.

Otherwise, C77 does fine.

I'd buy fresh PMC 62gr from TSE before buying that.

thanks for the advise guys. The ammo is at a gun store and there is only 650 rounds and it is all on stripper clips. and has a loader as well. I could buy it all for $300 but I don't want to do anything wrong. I figured if it was being sold from a gun shop that has been around for a while they would have gotten it ligit. who knows, it seems there is mixed opinions. I just liked the thought of milsurp ammo (not sure why mabey military grade). if any one knows anything more about it please feel free to chime in.

It sounds like it may be legit after all, but a bad batch.

ETA: Which brings buddies story into play, sounds like he's got the jist, just not all the facts.
 
i got a bunch of c77 from a board member that was advertised as ss109 it has functioned flawlessly and the chrono. says it`s pretty consistent at around 3030fps .
 
Just to add my .02, it is one thing for DND to surplus ammo, it is another for SNC to say their primary customer rejected this lot, we are offering it to you our dealer for the LE market. It could have gone to the civilian hands from there.

Sorry about that.

SNC Technologies makes all small arms ammunition for the Dept of National Defence.

DND is their largest customer for ammunition products in Canada. DND has requirements that their issued ammunition must pass. When the ammunition doesn't pass muster, then SNC needs to recoup losses. They then sell either outside Canada or to their LE Rep. SNC also makes Simunition Brand of training ammo.

thanks, I see what your saying, so to sum it up it is perfectly legal to have IVI ammo assuming the dates ad up, correct?
 
Well, SNC has made ammo for other countries also. So if they had lot's that were rejected, or possibly over run, then that ammo could also get out. The only thing that stopped me from buying it in the past was the price.....noticably more expensive. Plus, the range's bullet trap would have to be able to handle the steel penetrator in the bullet.
