5.56 enfield N0 4 conversion .... where can i find a barrel ?

I have a #4 in 22-250 with a heavy barrel. It's full wood with a scope mount. It's a nice looking rifle and it shoots better then I can. I never really looked at the bolt head but I will later and try to put up some pictures if I remember.

Hi
Thanks J

What was the cost of the kit? Is it just the bolt head? You could contact one of the Canadian barrel markers for a 5.56/223 barrel and have profiled. are you making full military configuration? or sporter? If sporter a 233 take of barrel can be reworked.

This conversion is not a new idea. Jim Dugan from Saskatchewan did these conversions in the early 1990's and competed in DCRA matches. Was very successful - few articles around. Bill Wyldea built Jim's DCRA winning Enfield in 223 on a No7 receiver with a 28" heavy profile Kreiger barrel; bolt headed was collared; single shot platform and an Anschutz style stock. Very "nice" looking and deadly accurate rifle. For those that remember Paul Bawden (d. July 2017) he set up Wentworth Arms and sold 7.62 and 5.56 rifles in a similar Anschutz configuration. They also manufactured prototype 5.56 No4's for a spec DND order that never went into production. Bolt head is very similar to the one posted. Ellwood Epps sold one in 2017 from a DCRA Shooters Estate here a couple years ago. I've seen 2 others.

Interesting build - keep us posted.

Ron

Hi
Glad the conversion idea is not new, it means out there is some experience of someone doing it .
Would hate to use one of my full wood No4's, thou it would be nice at the range

I have two sporters I don't really like about $200ish value each ?

so even spending a few $$ it will be cheaper than a new 5.56 rifle

and if it is not a nice project for me

cheers J

theres a group i fond on faaace boook, lee enfield rifle assoc, of australia ( LERA ) i see a few aussis have cconverted no4s as mentioned in this thread, i found it an interesting idea, glad a few canucks are onto the concept as well.

The British link provided won’t reply, because the bolt and barrel are considered pressure bearing parts. This causes him to much hassle to export, plus from my readings online he isn’t a pleasant fellow.

I heard something similar however it would be great to get a confirmation. That's $425 CDN and with Tax, Duty and Shipping would easily be $500. Would there be interest at this level? Ron

Anybody know what the Brit Vendor was selling his bolt heads for? Ron

Hi

Well I can only say he has replied ok to me,

price quoted to me was

Gbp 106.00 which is currently appx 180 Cdn ( plus shipping ) for the 5.56 conversion

cheers J

P.S

price NOT including barrel

That is reasonable enough. I could talk myself into that.

...not really. Just think that you can just buy a Savage Axis in .223...for less than that. Yes, we love our Enfields but to put too much $ into this is like pushing string uphill.

At that price it might make sense.

But this is not rocket science...I suspect someone in Canada could machine those bolt heads up for less.

I suppose that a Savage/Winchester style extractor could be installed in the guide lug, engaging the case rim in a recessed boltface.
I know little about CNC machining or the writing of the program, but it should be do-able.
The question is now many units could be sold? Enough to justify the effort?
A single shot conversion can use the original bolthead, with a suitable extractor.
I have a Dugan one piece conversion No. 7 with S&L .308 barrel, Canjar trigger in an early Robertson synthetic stock. While it is a decent enough shooter, I don't use it. It would be an excellent rifle to convert to .223/5.56. No provision for a magazine.
Maybe I'll keep my eyes open for a good take-off barrel with at least a 1:9 twist.
As mentioned previously, a M700 barrel can be rethreaded for a Lee Enfield. So can a Savage (originally 1 1/16-20), if a locknut is used. A locknut can be turned on the lathe, or the receiver ring from a scrapper can be turned round.

Early 90's DCRA - ORA guys might be able to help out.

This was a common conversion back then.

Hopefully Ganderite might be able to chime in.

My 22-250 and my .308 dcra. I didn't do a thing to either rifle. They were purchased as you see except I put scopes in the rings

The bolt on the left is out of the 22-250. They are both single shot. The 22-250 has a chunk of teflon in the mag body instead of the follower but has the spring in it to keep tension on the teflon block.
The dcra has an epoxy plug in the mag well.
Both do not eject at all

I had a reply from him last year but he had none in stock. He said he would have no problems exporting to Canada once he has them. I'm still trying to chase him down but once I do I fully intend to order one or two.

I'm specifically not suggesting a group buy because I believe the forum rules preclude me from doing so. So yeah...

Just send a PM to CGN Admin and ask.
