5.56 mm

Depending on where you are 'surplus' Is pretty much extinct due to 'global demand' as for 223/556 (same ####) try walmart/can. tire/russels/wholesale or Bashaw Sports (website) I have found the remington UMC FMJ to be a good performer but any thing now is at least 10.00 + a box for even FMJ

Ammo went up 44% this year....
 
Any ammo sold as .223 is .223 SAAMI not 5.56mm, regardless of the brass stamp. The US will not export 5.56 for general resale. American Eagle is .223, like the box says.

x2 on CanAm, closest known available is RUAG from TSE, which is a far step higher in quality and consistency than average military surplus 5.56mm.

News flash:

LOT 408 Federal Ammo is NATO stamped LC 07 and IS 5.56mm.

Remind me but NATO specs is only 5.56, and does not include .223, right ?

Its the last batch of surplus ammo from recent production.

Yes, if it says 5.56 it is. But there is lots (most) of Federal floating around with LC cases that is loaded to SAAMI 223 specs.
 
If a major US ammo company markets ammo as .223Rem, it will be .223Rem SAAMI, in both brass dimension and powder charge. If you take a 5.56NATO casing and trim and resize it to .223Rem SAAMI specs, it isn't 5.56x45 NATO brass anymore, it's .223Rem.

I have LC NATO stamped American Eagle in 50gn HP. It is without a doubt, not 5.56NATO (50gn HP NATO?)

My guess (!) is that they are so busy churning out brass for 5.56mm ammo, they stopped stamping cases for .223REM production. Current American Eagle ammo also has crimped and sealed primers.

Seems to be fine .223Rem ammo, that and the AE 55gnFMJ.

Federal does make 5.56mm ammo for civ consumption (often 'factory seconds') , it is sold as and marketed as 5.56NATO though. Unfortunately the US will not allow any 5.56mm to be exported at the moment, and haven't for the last few years.

One point from the oracle.

Dimensionally, 5.56 and .223 ammo are identical, though military 5.56 ammo is typically loaded to higher pressures and velocities than commercial ammo and may, in guns with extremely tight "match" .223 chambers, be unsafe to fire.

Chamber dimensions are different. .223 chambers are tighter with less throat length which will give a higher pressure. Go check the oracle out for the rest.
 
Federal operates Lake City - after Olin(winchester) lost the contract. That's why sometimes the 223 ammo have LC casings and NATO cross. Brass is brass....not a good practice but that's why they come in boxes with labels.

5.56 is generally about 200 fps faster than 223.
