Hello CGN People,
First off excuse my ignorance, I'm new to the world of ar but I had I have questions and I figured this is the best place to ask. Can you build a lower and swap out upper to go from 5.56 to 9mm? I was just think how awesome it would be to do a buy once cray once thing and build up the perfect lower that you can use for either. I know there is conversations for 22lr but I can't seem to see anything for 9mm. If there is a thread all ready in this just point me in the right detection but any info would help. Thanks.

Referring AR as Assault Rifle is not a good way to makes friends in the community, AR stands for Armalite.

As to your question, you will need to get a magazine block and change to a heavy buffer as well.

It is possible to convert a 5.56 rifle to 9mm. Depending on the 9mm version, a different hammer may be needed, along with bolt, barrel, buffer and magazine adapter. A dedicated upper would make a change faster and easier. This would not be a low priced project.

Can drop in a 9mm hammer or a M16 hammer w/o the notch, And a 9mm buffer. Then all you need is a magwell conversion block.. That's all you need to do for the lower.

That's how my AR15 was that I shot 9mm and 223/556 from.

Sorry I was always under the impression that's what AR stood for. I'm learning stuff already.

AR=Armalite Rifle

It's best to steer clear of calling our sporting rifles something the anti's call them to make them sound scary when they're on the ban wagon trying to take our sport from us.

If you want 9mm and 223 it can be done but it would be best to just have two complete rifles since there is a lot more to change than if you were swapping uppers for different barrel lengths or something like a 300 Blackout upper.

Anything 9mm AR is expensive and harder to find. My 9mm uses Colt pattern magazines but if I was going to build one or was starting from scratch I would probably go with a dedicated lower that uses Glock magazines, they are easier to find and they are all 10 round where the Colt mags are 5 round unless you find the even more rare 9mm Colt pattern pistol mags.

As has been mentioned yes. You need:

Non notched hammer 5.56 hammer, not the 9mm one
Ramped 9mm bolt (most are ramped these days)
9mm buffer
Drop in mag block (one that installs from the top)

Using a drop in mag block means that you lose the bolt hold open for 9mm mags but they simply drop into place and remove just as easily. The kind that insert from the bottom are held in place by tension screws and may need tweaking of their position to work well.

All you need to do if you go this route is swap uppers, bolt carrier groups and remove or install the mag adapter. You may also want to switch buffers back and forth as well since a 9mm is heavier than even an H3 but it should still work with 5.56mm. Conversion takes all of twenty seconds.

10rd Colt pattern pistol mags are not hard to come by. I need to grab some myself. All I have are Colt 5/20 and 5/32.

Questar lists a lot of parts for building a 9mm, browse their site and get a feel for how much it will cost to build one. I would just watch the EE and grab a complete rifle and go from there.
