5.56 too small?

From http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/dec99-03.asp

Quote "The present Declaration is only binding for the Contracting Powers in the case of a war between two or more of them.

It shall cease to be binding from the time when, in a war between the Contracting Parties, one of the belligerents is joined by a non-Contracting Power"

I do Believe the Taliban & Bin Ladden did not sign on to this Convention......

That then is the question, do we fight on supporting the civil action plans and get nowhere or does the fight get taken to the enemy, the areas get secured (using even more troops) and the correct environment for building a safe and secure state is put in place?

Some deployed battlegroups do actively take the fight to the enemy but they really do seem to have the casualty count to prove that they are starting from scratch at the beginning of each tour!

I fully agree, but until NATO ponies up another 100k so we can close the border with Pakistan fully, I believe we are SOL.

Oh man,

This again.....

Sigh.

Here here....the internet gun myths are strong in this thread.

Put the soldier in charge of all that.
Give them an allowance for parts & ammo.

Soldier bring hunting rifles....really...

Trying to say something productive to you but I got nothing....how about watch our troops doing the job. Think about what your saying....

nothing like personally trying to sort out your resupply of parts and ammo from Mom and Dad back home. Leave soldiering to the professionals. They might be smarter than you think.

An intersting article discusses the track recrd of the 5.56 in combat and concludes a larger, intermediate caliber would be better.

I am surprised to see that battlefield engagements are over 300 yards, 50% of the time.

http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/btb.pdf

300 yards really isn't that far considering using semi or full auto weapons, you don't really so much have to rely on one shot hits.

If anyone fancies a look at this from the UK perspective, this thread has been running for a while, some great posts from the old and the bold and some predictable ones from youngsters and non serving alike.
