5.56 use in Heavy barrel 223

Would it work, without damaging the gun? I have a heavy barreled Remington 700sps 223 and I know you can't put 5.56 ammo in a standard 223 but what about a heavy barreled 223?

I believe it is the chamber, not the barrel. My understanding is no, do not use 5.56 in a .223 chamber, but can use .223 in a 5.56.

Depends on the individual chamber. Some will tolerate it, some won't. - dan

From my reading the mil ammo expects a spacier chamber to accept a large variety of ammo without jamming. Life or death for a soldier. Mil brass is apparently thicker and loads are usually hotter. However if it is a military weapon like an AR then Hell yeah. I will not use mil ammo in my CZ527. I reload too so I just stick with Win brass. I collect and sell the brass for a large club here on the coast and get lots of both but I keep them separated just to be safe. A single case jammed in a chamber too tight might turn out to be an expensive experience too. Me-I will pass. The ammo for a 223 is cheap enough.

Has absolutely nothing to do with the barrel. Its the internal chamber dimensions. I shot 5.56 out of a .223 barrel on both the Savage 110 and Stevens 200.

(ya, I know...same company.... so let it go),

They were tight and the bolt was a little stiff to close. However, a shooting buddy of mine couldn't even closed the bolt due to the tighter tolerances of his Remington.

Same rounds, same day, same range.
