Well, lets start this awkward ball rolling.....

So, I am assuming you mean that you are purchasing an AR15...

Can you answer a few questions....

1. What Make / Model?
2. Do you know what the barrel is chambered for: (223 or 5.56)
3. Do you know the barrel twist rate?
.
.
3.5. What are you planing on shooting?
.
.
4. Do you play Call of Duty?! :onCrack:

I did not realize that I was asking such a stupid question. I s there another thread that is should be looking at:confused:
For general "fun" shooting the .223 in 55 gr is perhaps the least expensive way to go. The 62 gr ammo may shoot a little better in your AR15 clone depending on twist (mot likely 1:7 or 1:9). Lethality has nothing to do with it since you cannot hunt with the rifle and shooting humans is for some reason frowned up, go figure. :)

If your barrel is marked 5.56x45 then shooting mil surplus ammo is fine.

But what the gun is chambered for... That said, the Norinco should be able to digest. 223 or 5.56. Since it's restricted, and you'll more than likely only require a level of paper target lethality - feed it whatever functions, and is affordable...

Personally I use Winchester SBST and Federal bonded tactical ammo...

Your question stirs the pot in the AR community in a couple of different ways... Thus the Popcorn...

A] If the rifle is marked 5.56 you can shoot either .223 or 5.56.... Now... If it is marked .223 your can only shoot .223

B] The markings on the lower are to be treated independently of the actual barrel chambering.... so check what the barrel says... Just like any other gun...

C] AR's are only for shooting at CFO approved ranges here in Canada... so don't worry about "Lethal"...

Ps.
- A few websites say the rifle is .223 and a few others say 5.56... check your barrel
- The barrel seems to be a 1:9 twist.... either 55g or 62g will stabilize fine

Just for the hell of it:

I shot .223 American eagle 55grain fmj out of a 20" barrel and even at a range of 425 yards, It bored clean trough BC timber. The tree was about 16" in diameter.

If I absolutely have to use lethal force against the Target stand I always go m855, that steal penetrator always f**ks up the uprights. :sniper:w:h:

Only if your target sits in a car ... otherwise I would recommend an HP of any sort.

As a side note: From my penetration tests with a truck, a FMJ penetrates as well as an m855. Maybe that changes at longer distances or thicker armor

I did a penetration test of my own last night, she loved it w:h:

I AM SO GLAD THIS IS GOING DOWN.

For serial guys. Which one is best for bear defense?

It depends on what kind of bear you're shooting; koalas are fine with a .223, but grizzlies will really call for a 5.56x45mm hollow point tracer incendiary boat tail; make sure you're using the shoulder thing that goes up for maximum penetration. XD

Every AR15 exported from the USA must say .223 on it. They are not legally allowed to export anything with a military caliber designation.

Judge the above caliber 'rules' as you see fit, but I consider the two designations to be completely equal and interchangeable.
