The 5.8×42mm / DBP87 ("Dàn (弹) Bùqiāng (步枪) Pŭtòng (普通), 1987"; literally "Standard Rifle Cartridge, 1987") is an armor-piercing rifle cartridge developed in the People's Republic of China. There is limited information on this cartridge, although the People's Liberation Army says that it is superior to the 5.56×45mm NATO and 5.45×39mm Soviet cartridges.

Anyone have more info on this round other then wikipedia? Looks interesting

Thanks

I don't think the chinese exports this, and no one wants it either.

Some years ago, there were talks about poor quality. The rifle round seems to have a much bigger steel core than SS109, so naturally it performs better than SS109 in the AP department. I won't expect great accuracy because it looks like they fill lead into the jacket first and then somehow drop a steel knocker into the centre. Not sure how centered the steel knocker can be inside the bullet, and that affects accuracy.

The LMG round is more like a SS109 but with a much bigger steel tip, which is really a steel core with a token of lead to plug the base. It is technically a dedicated AP round. I read somewhere long time ago they wanted to transit to use just the LMG round because it is more accurate - don't quote me on that because I have no reference.

They put a lot of emphasis on AP, but terminal ballistics probably won't be that great. The cartridge is also more tapered so it needs AK style curved magazine.

I've never seen the round, and everyone I've ever asked about it has said the same thing, including a few collectors with some really odd stuff. For an issued round, it's certainly been kept very proprietary.
