Maybe all you gurus can set me up with quick answers to these questions my pal asked me to find out about? Thanks in advance!

1. Do all new in-store Norc M14's come with a welded on flash suppressor and a bayonet lug? If so, where are bayonets available?

2. What should come in the package (included stuff) with the rifle when bought new? Mags, strap, cleaning rod? etc...?

3. If using the rifle for game (elk), what is the preferred brand of .308/150 grain ammo or just try a few different brands?

4. Is there a "prefered" brand of scope mount for a 3X9 "hunting scope"...?(medium cost and easy to install yet effective)

5. Recommendations for a bi-pod? (same qualifications as for question #4...)

1) the flash hider/suppressor is standard and WELDED ON- the bayonet lug IS NOT there, and the only way you can get one is to get a usgi flash supressor or maybe a springfield m1a - the bayonet itself is a us m6- not all that easy to come by either
2 cleaning kit is stowed in the butt- but no ratchet brush- there wasn't a sling with mine, and one 5 round mag- some also have a 20/5 round mag- depends on wrom whom you buy it
3) personally, the 308 is a little light for elk in any configuration esp with the limtations put upon it by the m14 action- ie top end is 170 grain bullets for all practical purposes- that means 165 for hunting, and 168 for target- the min typical elk load is a 180- not to say it WON'T DO it , just that it's right on the fringe and you better be sure of your shot
4) arms 18- if you can find the old style, so much the better
5) i use a harris, mounted by drilling out one of the rivets , putting in a stock stud and epoxing the thing in- the procedure is found both here on the net and IN THE STICKIES

I was able to tap my flash hider free with a block of wood and a hammer. It was spot welded in a couple of places. Others have been unable to get theirs off. YMMV here.

A cleaning kit, combo tool, chamber brush and tube of heavy oil were in the butt stock. There was a sling in the box. I ordered extra magazines which were also in the box.

No idea about hunting, I shoot paper.

The Basset mount seems to be getting favourable reviews here as a low cost option.

My chu wood stock has a hole in it already for a bipod. I don't have one on it. The options here are almost endless. Find something that fits your price point and adapt it to fit.

that hole is NOT for the bipod- it's a DRAIN HOLE to let water out from between the gas assembly and the stock- it should REMAIN OPEN

1) already answered

2) The strap that comes with the Norc is a POS. I bought a 3 point sling from Dave's Surplus and Tactical (a sponsor) fo around $40. I love it

3) I use 168 gr Federal Matchking HPBT. It is expensive stuff but am able to keep 4 shots in under 2 inches at 200 m.

4) I bough a Smith 2024 mount when they still made them last year and use a Falcon Merlin 4-14. It a great scope but not the best for hunting. I would personally get a Bushy 3200 3-9 with raingaurd.

5) Mine has a Rock Mount bipod. Everyone says to get a Harris but I'm happy with mine.

.308 Win

Thanks all...he has a box of ammo .308 WIN /150GR...is .308Win and .308 the same thing? Just a commercial name? 150 is too light I guess? I thought these rifles don't like to shoot more than 150 grain ammo?

rzmitch: Yeah, go ahead and shoot some 165's out of your M14. I used to compete regularly with the 168 gr Sierra MK up to 600 yards in my NRA High Power matches. Yah, 308 and .308 Win are the same thing , unless one wants to flame me for being super specific about bullet diameters. And yes, it's a commercial name. The rifles have experienced op rod battering and broken op rods after shooting lots and lots of 175 gr. Sierra Match King bullets at Camp Perry back in the middle 1990's... this is not a new story.

I'm in the process of shopping for a Falcon 1.5 x 5 x 30mm for around $ 304 from CyberK (a dealer here on CGNutz). I'll be using this unit for service conditions shooting. And yes, I shoot up to 500m using the 125 gr. weights of bullets... Hey, I'm only shooting paper. And also, these bullets sure pack a wallop when I used them on groundhogs (earthpigs) here in Central Ontario.

Heeere, kitty, kitty , kitty!!

308 and 308 winchester are ASSUMED to be the same thing in most circles, the other 308 being a 30-06- usually referred to as an '06-
now as to bullet weight , it's been my experience and some others that HEAVIER bullets work BETTER, provided you stay within the 170 grain limit- now your elk is a far bigger and more densly boned animal, and you want a bullet that's going to break bones and punch vitals- which may or may not happen with a 150 grain - it's DEFINATELY going to happen with a 165,
again if you do your part
all that being said, my scabbard still carries a savage 99 with 308/180s in it b/c that's what i like, and there are some folks that praise the 338 win mag with 250 grainers- personally i think that's a little over the top
