Hi all
I just bought a #5 MK1 carbine at a gunshow today, and I had a few questions about it. (No pics yet, my wife has the camera with her). There appears to be no markings on the reciever, just an "ENGLAND" stamp with a broad arrow on the left butt socket. Also, other than proof marks, there seems to be no serial number anywhere on the rifle other than a very faint one on the bolt handle. (looks like "xx68", but hard to be sure even with a magnifying glass). Is this normal for one of these? All the examples I have seen are FTRs from Liverpool, so electropenciled on the left reciever wall.
This carbine has definitely seen much usage; most of the metal (especially the barrel) is "in the white", and the walnut stock is pretty battered, but that's what appealed to me:the history of it. Happily, the bore is in excellent condition, which is what made up my mind to purchase her. A very nice addition to my Enfield collection!!:D

Replying to my original post...after a good cleaning, and using an illuminated magnifying glass, I can just barely make out the "FAZ 1945..."and the serial number on the left reciever wall. My bad!

True, but I think that the others I saw were a tad overpriced. ($375 for a varnished #5 with no mag or bayonet lug?) I'm pretty happy with my purchase,I got her for a fair price and she cleaned up real good!:)

My No5 butt socket numbers are very deeply stamped. Very visible on the bolt handle, but faint electro pencil on the action, Mine is an ROF, 1946.
What sort of price were these rifles selling for?
Need a bayonet, anyone have one for sale?

Mine was $350, got it for $300, there was a varnished one missing the bayonet lug for $375 and another one that looked in decent shape for $475.
Original #5 bayonets are pretty scarce. (and expensive) Repros for $75 on FleaBay...I have mine on order.

Sounds like you got it for a fair price. I was at a show in Ontario on Sunday, and saw one with no bayonet for $675. The guy said that with bayonet, one "couldn't touch it for under $1200" lol.

I guess a $250 bayonet doubles the value of a rifle that is already overpriced.

Here she is, in all her "well worn" beauty. I am wondering if this carbine was used in the so called "Malayan Emergency" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayan_Emergency) as it truly has seen some heavy usage. The bluing looks to be almost in the white, and the stock has some deep gouges and dents. From my understanding, the #5 Mk1 didn't see much deployment against in the Pacific theater, please correct me if I'm wrong. This rifle appears to be matching except for the front sight blade; it appears to be an aftermarket replacement made by Lyman.

It could also be a put together rifle. While the receiver might say "Faz 1945" the front sight is marked "M47C" BSA-Shirley another major maufacture of No.5s. Check for recondition codes from POF. Also check for the correct backsight which would be a sixth variation stamped unit graduated from 200 to 800 yards only, correct for a late 1945 rifle. If it has this sight and not the milled 5th variation sight (1944, 1946-47) It should correctly be a Faz 1945 No.5 Mk2. My info comes from the North Cape pub.

A great rifle nonetheless. Surely one who's recoil will make you check that your dental plan is in place.
