Looking at Sako's website and day dreaming; it lists the magazine capacity for .338 wm kodiaks as 5 rounds. Curious if any owners can verify this or if it's a typo? Looks like brown bears in magnum calibers hold 4.

Also curious about potbelly magazine rifles like the p14 magnum conversions, how many rounds do they hold down?

Can you buy magnum 5 round internal or floorplate for mauser 98's that hold 5 rounds of 338 or 458 down?

Thanks

Swift ( formerly Blackburn ) and Weibe sell drop box magazines for belted mags that hold 5 down. It's a custom proposition that requires a deeper belly to the stock and some metal removal from the rails as well. Finding someone who could do that without buggering up the action would be a challenge up here. I was/am tempted to have a 5-rd .458 stopping rifle built, but I don't need to spend $15,000 on a large bore plinker.

I have an M1917 converted to 300Win Mag - as is, the follower is an unaltered original military. It has the "goose neck drop down" floor plate, not the straightened one. Holds 6 x 30-06 but only 4 x 338 Win Mag cases. The P14's all have blocked mags for the shorter 303 British length and ribs in their magazine sidewalls, so a bunch of work to optimize a P14 magazine for a belted magnum? I do not think it would be too difficult to thin that follower to gain a fifth belted mag in the magazine, but I have never tried that. A second, unaltered M1917 would not accept the belt end between the feed rails - this one might be "one of" or maybe a few file swipes are needed for clearance of those rails, besides opening up the bolt face and fussing with the extractor. I had heard was a thing to use P14 bolts in M1917 conversions - do not have one, but bolt face and breech end are quite different between M1917 and P14 - probably does not matter if a custom barrel is used, but the 308 Norma, the 300 Win Mag and the 300 Weatherby that I have here all used the original 30-06 military barrel with the coned breech.

A nice BAR in .458 Win would be a fine stopper rifle that's an affordable & effective build for many folks. These only hold 4 rds, but if ye need more than 2,
ye ain't doin' it right.

Funny potashminer halfway through your post I was wondering: could you just use a p14 bolt in a p17 sporter, set the headspace and go to town?

Purely academic because that would be wildly expensive.

Slimbo I feel like you might need to be Dogleg to pull that one off, something to do with what the kids call "BDE"

Four rounds is better than three, and five better than four for the purposes of this discussion.

Are there no floorplates that extend beyond the stock to be flush with the trigger guard allow for a higher magazine capacity? Maybe off base but wouldn't this eliminate the need to widen a magazine using extra length to accommodate more cartridges?

Is a BSA p17 sporter in 300 win holding four rounds down?

Still waiting for a 10 round mag dump video. 5000 grains in a few seconds.

Your easiest option might be a cz550 in 458 Lott. They hold 5 down and are relatively cheap. For some reason my Brno 602 in 375 held 6 down.

My magnum Sakos hold 4 down, no problem. Kimber Magnums hold 4 down. CZ 550 Safari magnums hold 5 down in regular magnums, 6 in at least the .375 if you know the trick. There not much you can’t fix with 7 shot three seven five.....:)

I think pairing a stainless steel receiver from an m77 or zastava mauser with a 458 stainless barrel I have would be the cheapest option atm.

There was a cheap 338 kimber on the e.e, for some reason that 4 round mag capacity makes it a lot more attractive to me. Hopefully by the time Ruger gets some .338 alaskans into Canada the economy has recovered a bit.

Current plans are to moose hunt this season with a .308 handi rifle with a bushnell scope lmao.

I believe that the Sako Safari’s held 5 belted rounds ‘down’ as do the ZKK 602’s
