I'm sitting on something, ahem, expendable income and am trying to figure out a way of passing the time until my RPAL comes in the mail. I keep eyeing AR15s, even going to far as to gawk at what our south-of-the-border cousins get to bring to range (see ar15.com), and I find myself returning to the same question. How much does using a 5-rounder as opposed to a 30-rounder affect the enjoyability of the firearm? Is there anyway around it (other than converting to .22)? It really is the only thing holding me back from seriously considering investing in a black rifle. Thanks much.

just buy the ar 15 and lots of mags LOL

and you will save money on ammo not having the 30 round mags

All just practise for when the zombies come. Just think, you get way more training on changing mags than those Yanks...

Really? They've inspired me to get a .22LR upper with full mags.

Well if you want to shoot something other than .22lr, 10 rounds of .223 sounds A LOT better than 5. At least you can have a little fun with 10 rounds, and be legal.

How much are .22lr uppers and where do you get the mags? Because that would be a nice change from my 10/22 lol

Also, what is the cap of the .22 mags?

No magazine restrictions on rim-fire rifle. :)

And yes the AR-15 Pistol magazines make buying a AR-15 or STANAG compatible rifle more interesting for me as well. :p

Dimitri:

Double check you facts...

Rimfire pistol magazines are still limited to 10 rounds... Rimfire rifle magazines have no capacity limit.

While it's possible to have essentially an unlimited capacity 22LR magazine for your converted AR15, it is very difficult to find anything larger than 10 rds.

We have a shipment of Black Dog 27 Round magazines arriving in about 6 weeks...

I read somewhere that the AR-15 is like a Barbie doll for men - its so true! Lots of mods and accessories do be done/had. IMO, the AR-15 is a must-have for any target shooter with an RPAL.

So how do you convert your AR15 to .22lr??

Do you just put in a .22lr upper and then your set? So in theory if you have 2 uppers you can switch them back and forth (as long as they are both registered for that gun)... or would that still be illegal?

AR-15 uppers are not registered, the lower receiver is concidered the firearm as it has the serial number on it.

You don't even really need a new upper, your 1/7 or 1/9 will work fine. All you need is throw the .22 BCG in and the magazine and your good to go. However you will get some leading in your barrel and it might not be that accurate past 25 yards, which is why some people have a dedicated 22LR upper or a 1/12 twist barrel which works great with 22LR.
