I have a possibility to get my hands on a .50 cal rifle and 200 rounds to start ... I'm also coming into some serious funds soon to possibly purchase or have built a .338 lapua rifle ... or should I just work on my Remington 700 in .308 and practice? I have WIDE open space where I live and want to shoot long distance for fun ... and eventually hunt long range.(longer than 300 yards as I've shot tuktu that far only) I'm curious what your opinions, thoughts are on my choices? :D

p.s. got the reloading eqpt for .308 and learning ... wouldn't be difficult to get for .338 lapua ... just a note!

Everyone is saying 50 cause everyone wants one, it is quite the novelty gun. I would love to touch off a few rounds from it, but after that it would be a safe queen. Not many people can afford to shot $5.00 bills every time they shoot it. I would go with the 338 either the AI or TRG42. (my preference is the AI), It is flat shooting and is very accurate beyond 1,000.

here is the AI Artic Warfare model...I beleive the bottom photo is the true Artic model as it does not have the folding stock.

Let us know which one you chose.

One more suggestion. how about the DTA SRS switch barrel in 338. I have seen one around here and it is the s**ts. not sure if it is cold weather friendly but the cool factor is pretty high.

338 Lapua. As far as a rifle recommendation goes.....I don't think there is a wrong choice out there. Personally I like the Timberwolf but that's a purely biased opinion since I shoot one on a regular basis and know how accurate it can be with good handloads. I'm sure the DTA/AI/TRG/custom would be no different so you have some good choices available to you. Whatever you choose you're going to have to practice and do some load development so a 50 could get expensive...fast. Just my $0.02.......:).

Nice case . Fantastic equipment. Just saw a show last week . APTN all about the Rankin Inlet winter shooting matches. Looked like a cold but great time.

The range sign was fantastic.

Forget the 50 unless you really want to blast.. I think it's over kill..
the 308 should do just fine out to where you need it with the right ammo.. But if you want a bigger bang get the 338

I have had a chance to play with all the common boomers and they are fun BUT if you want LR precision, smaller cals will do just as well if not better.

If you want to practise and plink with a 308, the 223 will do it all and then some.

If you want extreme range shooting, a fast 7mm will equal or beat anything larger. Run the numbers for a 180gr Berger VLD or the new Hybrid at 3000fps. Best part, is that it will be very accurate.

This 7mm will also be lethal on any northern grass eater out to 1000yds. How far do you want to hunt?

I am not suggesting a small cal will hit as hard as a big cal but I didn't think cariboo needed alot of convincing to fall over.

For longer barrel life and reduced costs, something like the 6BR will put huge smile on your face as you plink away to a mile. A 6.5 can easily go beyond 2000yds.

how far do you want to shoot?

Boomers are fun but very quickly the novelty runs out and the added precision of a small cal gets far more interesting.

Jerry is right, all the cool people shoot 6BR or 7mm mags (in a variety of gas tanks). ;)

But in your dilemma, I gotta go with a custom built 338AI or Edge. 300gr Bergers sound pretty ###y. :D
