50-90

Has anyone fired a 50-90 and if you did how bad is the recoil. I know my 45-70's with 535grn bullets seem to kick harder and harder as the round count goes up. I fired 50 rounds yesterday and I admit it - - I finally had to put on a Past shoulder pad. I'm thinking of buying a Pedersoli 74 Sharps in 50-90 for the Buffalo season here in the NWT, not for competition. cheers

I think the bigger question is would you get any better performance with a 50-90 than with a 45-70? I suspect the recoil would be the same or a little more than what you are now shooting. I do know that the recoil of a 45-120 is a lot more than from a 45-70 and enough that it is not a pleasure to shoot the gun and makes sighting in difficult. Also you want to compare the weight of the gun you are proposing to buy vs the one that you currently shoot. A heavier gun will reduce the perceived recoil.

I use the 50/90 Sharps for hunting and find it about the most effective gun on game i have used. Recoil in my 11lb. '74 is heavy but bearable and more of a shove than a kick. If you are going to use black powder, the 50/90 has it all over the 45/70 from a power standpoint as I shoot alot of both. If you are planning to use smokeless, the 45/70 is a much better choice. The problem with the 50/90 and smokeless loads is just finding a load that gives consistent ignition in that large case.
